Case of Uludere airstrike remains ?puzzle? as military refuse to share info

ERBIL, June 10 (AKnews) ? The case of Uludere airstrike where 34 Kurdish civilians were killed Turkish jets last year has remained a ?puzzle? despite prosecutors looking into it, according to Turkish media reports.

According to Today?s Zaman newspaper, Diyarbak?r Prosecutor?s Office, which is investigating into what went wrong during the Dec. 28, 2011, attack ? when local Kurdish smugglers were crossing the [Iraqi] border back into Turkey were bombed by military jets - has requested documents from the General Staff regarding the structure of the command chain hierarchy in the air force. ?But the General Staff has so far not shared all of the requested information?

Although Turkish military said the Kurdish smugglers were mistaken for Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rebels when the jets bombed them, Kurdish officials in the country, as well as reports, indicate that smugglers are easily recognized by the military and they always take the same route and travel in groups of over 30 unlike PKK rebels who have acquired hiding techniques and don?t travel in such large groups that may be visible to the military.

The specially authorized Diyarbak?r chief prosecutor has said: ?We are waiting for some documents from the General Staff. We are trying to put the pieces together. We are trying to draw up a chart of who answers to whom in local and regional military units -- who took orders from whom.?

Smuggling in the poverty-stricken Kurdish rotisseries of southeastern Turkey is common. Many people travel day long distances on feet or horseback to cross the border into the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of Iraq carrying goods to sell in the Kurdish market and return with the money.
