First Week Of October: ISM, Presidential Debates, And The Jobs ...

Get lots and lots of rest today.

This first week of October is going to be HUGE from both an economic standpoint.

First, here's an abbreviated version of what's coming up. These bullets are courtesy of Dave Lutz at Stifel, Nicolaus:

  • Chinese Markets closed for Golden Week
  • Central Bank Decisions from Aussie, BOE, ECB and BOJ
  • Big Ben speaks, and the Minutes from the September meeting
  • Global PMI Data ? China, EU, UK, USA
  • September Auto Sales and Retailer Same Store Sales
  • US and EU Employment reports
  • A Big Spanish Bond Auction
  • Value Investing Conference ? Major HF speakers
  • European Banking Authority - final report on capital plans
  • The First debate between Gov. Romney and President Obama

Now, here's the full schedule:

MONDAY: It's global PMI day. So starting late Sunday night in the US, we'll be getting critical manufacturing reports from Asia, and then Europe, and then of course the US, concluding with the US at 10:00 AM ET. Also at 10:00 AM ET we get Construction Spending for October. There's also going to be a monetary policy speech by Bernanke, a speech by the head of the SF Fed. At the Value Investing Congress, Bill Ackman, Whitney Tilson, and other swill present picks.

TUESDAY: In the US we get September Auto & Truck Sales, which should provide a critical gauge of the state of the jobs market. The Aussie Central Bank will also act. And we get the New York ISM report. It's also the second day of the Value Investing Congress, so more potentially market-moving picks from hedgies.

WEDNESDAY: We get our first big preview of Friday's non-farm payrolls report, with the ADP jobs report, coming out at 9:15 AM ET. It's also non-manufacturing PMI day, so we'll get numbers from China, Europe, and the US. Wednesday night of course is also the night of the first debate between Romney and Obama. Everyone will be watching.

THURSDAY: The all-important Initial Claims number comes out at 8:30 AM ET. In Europe, there will be rate decisions from the BoE and the ECB (the press conference should be most interesting), and there will be bond auctions in Spain and France. Later in the day, there will be a speech from Fed Governor Bullard.

FRIDAY: The week ends with the Grande Finale of economic data: The September Jobs Report. This needs no hyping of course. Also at 3 PM ET that day, August Consumer Credit is revealed.

As we said: Get some rest. This is going to be big.

Cancellation of Air India Express flight to Kochi draws ire

Muscat: Hundred-and-eighteen passengers who were supposed to fly from Muscat to Kochi, the commercial capital of the southern Indian state of Kerala, in an Air India Express flight, were accommodated in hotels in Ruwi as their flight developed a "technical glitch-?.

"The aircraft has developed a technical glitch before its flight. Engineers are doing their best to resolve the problem. As soon as the problem is resolved, the passengers will be flown to their destination,-? Amresh Chaudhary, country manager of Air India in Muscat, told Times of Oman.

Meanwhile, the passengers who were stranded due to the flight cancellation were seen visibly agitated at the airport

"The flight was to take off at 11.50am and all the passengers had checked in. There was no information initially. We were waiting for the bus to transports us to the aircraft. By 12pm, some officials came and said that the flight could only leave the next day,-? Reji Sahul, one of the stranded Air Indian Express passengers, said.

"They are providing hotel accommodation. Some who came on visit visa and those who have cancelled their visas are provided accommodation at the airport itself,-? he said, while adding that there are at least 15 families among the passengers, including a pregnant woman and infants.

Since last week, passengers from Kerala to Middle East destinations are going through a harrowing time with Air India announcing cancellation of several of its flights.

Woes continue
Last Saturday, passengers created unruly scenes at the airport at Thiruvananthapuram when a Sharjah-bound flight was cancelled at the last minute. Though the reason for the cancellation was cited as "technical-?.

Most of the flights that were cancelled are Air India Express flights, 90 per cent of which were being operated from Kerala.
According to media reports, Air India had cancelled 168 flights from three international airports in Kerala -? Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode -? to Gulf destinations from September 17.

Miguel Maysonet runs for 220, two TDs as Stony Brook controls Army

By Greg Logan, Newsday

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- It was halftime Saturday afternoon?at Michie Stadium, and Stony Brook had quieted an Army crowd of 31,006 by taking a 13-point lead. The?Seawolves' first-ever win over an FBS school in five tries was so close they could taste it, but they were mindful of what happened two weeks earlier at Syracuse, when a three-point halftime lead dissolved into an 11-point loss.

This time the Seawolves (4-1) left no doubt. They took the second-half kickoff and held the ball for 16 plays and a season-high 8:23, driving 75 yards for Miguel Maysonet's second touchdown to send them on their way to a dominant 23-3 victory over the Black Knights (0-4).

Describing the mood in the halftime locker room, Stony Brook left tackle Scott Hernandez said: "It goes back to Week 3 against Syracuse. We came out as an offense and did not finish that game, and that left a bitter taste in our mouths. We told ourselves, 'We're not going to let that happen again. We're going to finish this game and play harder than we've ever played before.' And that's exactly what we did."

Maysonet capped that epic drive with a 1-yard scoring run to go with the 49-yard TD he scored on the Seawolves' fourth play of the game. For the second straight week, the senior rushed for a career high, carrying 32 times for 220 yards as SBU controlled the ball for 38:06.

"I'm excited for us to be able to say that we were the first team to in Stony Brook history," an exultant Maysonet said. "I love those 'firsts.' "

SBU's offense played defense by controlling the ball to keep an Army running attack that led the nation in rushing with 399.0 yards per game off the field. The Seawolves' opening 74-yard drive lasted only four plays as Maysonet broke over the left side to score from 49 yards for a 7-0 lead, but the drives that resulted in three Wes Skiffington field goals of 27, 44 and 25 yards took 11 plays, 12 plays and 10 plays.

Coach Chuck Priore made a?subtle?halftime adjustment, adding two running plays involving tight end Chris Fenellon in the blocking scheme, and they fueled the opening drive of the second half.

"That drive reflected those adjustments," Priore said. "It was two things we didn't work on all week . . . We put a drive together that showed we had arrived."

Army's triple-option running game was deceptive, but Stony Brook held the Knights to 273 yards, 126 below their average, forcing and recovering four fumbles and producing a goal-line stand. Army had a pair of 100-yard rushers in each of its first three games but was topped by 89 yards from quarterback Trent Steelman and 81 from Raymond Maples.

Rover back Dan Mulrooney recovered one fumble and stopped Steelman for no gain on fourth-and-1 at the Stony Brook 4-yard line in the first quarter to protect the 7-0 lead.

"Playing an option team, you know the ball is going to be on the ground," Mulrooney said. "We were 4-for-4 on fumble recoveries. When you have that stat, it's hard to lose."

Indeed, this was the complete game the Seawolves and Priore believed they could play, especially after the way they came back to win the previous week against Colgate.

"I told them before the game, I think this team rode last year's team up until the second half of last week," Priore said. "I told them, 'If you really want it to be your team, you have to do something today.' "

The message came through loud and clear

Your Home Based Business: What to look for in an Affiliate ProgramBy Claude Pelanne

Trying to find an affiliate program for the new person just starting out on the Web is like walking into the proverbial Star Wars bar. There are many strange looking creatures and none have your best interest in mind. So what can you do? When you are choosing an affiliate program there are some key things to look for as you do your due diligence.

The first thing is to research the legitimacy of the business. How long has the business been in operation? Who is the principal owner? Is there contact information so you can contact him or her to verify company information. What is the company track record? What are people saying about the program? One option is to google the program or the owner name. I tried that and avoided a number of scams. Another option is to find a reputable forum and post a question about a program you are looking at. You will be surprised by the information people will give you.

Another factor is whether the affiliate charges a membership fee. Many affiliates do not, but some do and if you are new to the business, this can be a good thing. If you pay a fee, see what you are getting for the money. Do they have marketing tools to help sell the product? Is there a proprietary system that will increase your sales? Fees are not necessarily a bad thing if there is good return on your investment. Many programs that say they have a system have nothing more than a written report. Though the information may be nice to know, the report often offers nothing about HOW to implement an action plan.

Check and see how affiliate payments are disbursed. Are they monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly? Is there a minimum volume that triggers a payment. Whatever the system, make sure you understand it thoroughly before you make your decision to join.

What is the commission rate? Some affiliate programs offer a 25% commission. while others offer 75%. Some may pay a fraction of a percent on certain offerings. Generally you can get that information if you go through Clickbank or Paydotcom but make sure to get that information up front before you sign up.

See whether the affiliate offers tracking information to oversee what the conversion rate is for incoming prospects. You also want to know the number of impressions and click throughs that are being generated by your campaign. This is important because some programs pay for impressions and click throughs.

Finally, see if the program is a single tier or double tier system. A one tier pays you for the business you send to the program. A double tier pays you for the business generated by someone you have referred to the program.

These are some of the important points to understand when selecting an affiliate program. Asking the right questions up front can ensure that you will have a very prosperous experience.

Good luck and may your travels be prosperous!

Bad Piggies (for Android)

Bad Piggies, Rovio's buzzworthy follow-up to Angry Birds, will probably not appeal to the same casual gaming crowd that's addicted to catapulting birds, but it's a very good game in other ways. It's slower, more thoughtful, more skill-based.

Bad Piggies features the same green pigs you were probably trying to knock down inAngry Birds, and the same UI sensibilities. However this time, your goal is to build a vehicle to propel your pig through an obstacle course, collecting crates and stars along the way.?

If you enjoyed the physics element in Rovio's other app Amazing Alex, then Bad Piggies will leave you hooked. Personally, I found it frustratingly difficult and switched to the brainless Angry Birds for a break.

Gameplay
At the start of each level you're given a toolbox of items?wooden boxes (identical to the ones in Angry Birds obstacles), umbrellas, balloons, wheels, and more?from which you can build a vehicle that ideally takes your pig through all the stars and points-based items in your landscape. You swipe to drag the items into a grid formation to build your vehicle, tap a checkmark, and watch your Rube Goldberg machine set off. You can redo a level as many times as you like. Just like in Angry Birds and Amazing Alex, you can earn one to three stars. One star will let you move on to the next level, and there are 90 in all, though most of you will probably aim for a perfect score.

Bad Piggies is slow-moving, even slower than Rovio's other physics game, Amazing Alex. The vehicles roll through landscapes rather slowly (compared to flung Angry Birds, anyway) so if you need to rebuild your vehicle, it can take several minutes finishing a level. That's a long time in casual gaming land. If you simply can't figure out how to build the right vehicle, you can power up by tapping Hire a Mechanic (in Angry Birds the equivalent is the Mighty Eagle). A mechanic simply builds the contraption for you. You get 3 mechanics for free just by liking the Bad Piggies Facebook page, but after that you'll need to open your wallet. However, you can keep hiring mechanics, starting from $1.99 for ten.

I never made it to the four promised sandbox stages, which apparently let you use any sort of item to build a vehicle and collect crates.

Fun, But the Pigs Are No Birds
Bad Piggies is a high-quality game, but it won't replace Angry Birds. Instead of half-attentively catapulting birds like in the latter, Bad Piggies requires your complete attention to solve puzzle after puzzle. A lot of people try to draw comparisons to Angry Birds, but it's much more similar to Amazing Alex, and will appeal to the same crowd that would rather solve a puzzle than race to the finish line.

FEMA trailer lawsuit settled for $42.6 million

David Friedman / NBC News

File photo shows a FEMA trailer park near Highway 90 in Bay St. Louis, Miss., in 2007.

By Mike BrunkerNBC News

More than six years after Gulf Coast victims of Hurricane Katrina began experiencing adverse health effects while living in travel trailers provided by the federal government for temporary housing, a federal judge in New Orleans has given his final approval to a $42.6 million settlement of a class-action lawsuit alleging that the units emitted hazardous levels of the toxic chemical formaldehyde.

U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt approved the deal Thursday after hearing from attorneys who brokered the agreement between the plaintiffs and more than two dozen manufacturers of mobile homes provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Roughly 55,000 residents of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Texas will be eligible for shares of $37.5 million paid by more than two dozen manufacturers, the Associated Press reported. They also can get shares of a separate $5.1 million settlement with FEMA contractors that installed and maintained the units.

Dan Balhoff, a court-appointed special master, will determine the plaintiffs' awards, the AP said. Up to 48 percent of the total settlement money ? or approximately $20,5 million -- will be deducted for attorneys' fees and costs, it said. Assuming the remainder is divided equally among 55,000 plaintiffs, the plaintiffs would receive about $4,020 apiece.

Payments are expected to go out late this year or early next year, the AP said.

Engelhardt presided over three trials for claims against FEMA trailer manufacturers and installers after he was picked in 2007 to oversee hundreds of consolidated lawsuits. The juries in all three trials sided with the companies and didn't award any damages.

As msnbc.com (now NBCNews.com) first reported in July 2006, residents of the trailers began complaining of headaches, nosebleeds and breathing difficulty shortly after moving into the trailers, which were trucked to the Gulf Coast by the tens of thousands after Katrina and Rita devastated the area in rapid succession in 2005.

Air quality tests of 44 FEMA trailers in early 2006 conducted by the Sierra Club found formaldehyde concentrations as high as 0.34 parts per million ? a level nearly equal to what a professional embalmer would be exposed to on the job, according to one study of the chemical?s workplace effects.

And government tests on hundreds of trailers in Louisiana and Mississippi announced in 2008 found formaldehyde levels that were, on average, about five times what people are exposed to in most modern homes.?

FEMA, which isn't a party to the settlements, had long downplayed the health risks from formaldehyde exposure before those test results were announced.

It eventually began auctioning off the units as ?scrap? ? meaning they should not be used for human habitation ? in October 2008, but some unscrupulous buyers apparently were able to dodge regulations?and return them to the housing pool.?

Formaldehyde gas -- the airborne form of a chemical used in a wide variety of products, including composite wood and plywood panels in the travel trailers that FEMA purchased to house hurricane victims -- is considered a human carcinogen, or cancer-causing substance, by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and a probable human carcinogen by the EPA.

Gerald Meunier, a lead plaintiffs' attorney, told the AP that the deal provides residents with "somewhat modest" compensation but allows both sides to avoid the expense and risks of protracted litigation.

"Dollar amounts alone do not determine whether a settlement is fair and reasonable," he said.

Jim Percy, a lawyer for the trailer makers, said Engelhardt would have had to try cases individually or transfer suits to other jurisdictions if the settlement wasn't reached.

"It was not going to end quickly, and it was going to be even more monumental for all the parties concerned," he said.

But that doesn't mean the deal isn't a disappointment for many residents who blame their illnesses on the cramped trailers they occupied for months on end.

"We were told not to look for much," said Anthony Dixon, a New Orleans resident who says he developed asthma while living in a FEMA trailer for two years.

Dixon, 58, attended the hearing with his wife and mother to learn more about the deal.

"We're glad to get it over with," he added.

Engelhardt noted he received a letter from a woman whose 66-year-old mother, Agnes Mauldin, of Mississippi, died of leukemia in 2008 after living in a FEMA trailer. Mauldin's daughter, Lydia Greenlees, said the settlement offers "very little" for what her family considers to be a wrongful death case.

"I am saddened about the settlement in that I feel like it makes a mockery of my mother's life," Greenlees wrote. "I don't want anyone to think for one second that I view this settlement as a fair trade for my mother's life. I do not."

A group of companies that includes Gulf Stream Coach Inc., Forest River Inc., Vanguard LLC and Monaco Coach Corp. will pay $20 million of the $37.5 million settlement with the trailer makers.

Shaw Environmental Inc., Bechtel Corp., Fluor Enterprises Inc. and CH2M Hill Constructors Inc. are among the FEMA contractors that agreed to pay shares of the separate $5.1 million settlement.

Only a handful of formaldehyde-related claims are still pending, including some against FEMA by a group of Texas residents.

End the flood misery with the right insurance

AS the news about flooding continues in the UK, it is apparent that the best defence you can have against the massive financial losses is flood insurance.

Hundreds of homes have been evacuated and the news is filled with stories of people seeing water come into their homes and totally destroy everything. Apparently it doesn?t look too bad when the water goes but then they say the smell starts to set in and everything from plaster to floors to all belongings need to be replaced.

That is incredibly expensive to put right and I?d venture to say nearly impossible to do unless you are mega rich or have insurance in place.

Just add up the numbers. How much to take the entire bottom floor of your house and strip it back to the walls and concrete and then rebuild it and replace the contents. I don?t live extravagantly but I?d say somewhere in the region of ?30,000 for my own home. I can?t afford to find that sort of cash if the floods come in.

And where do I live when the work takes place and who will pay for that? I can?t afford to leave my home and rent another one. Again, this is where good insurance steps in to the rescue.

So flood insurance is the best option by far. If you buy it from a specialist then it will reflect the real risk of flood that you face and cover you in case the worst really does happen ? as many people are finding out this week in the UK.

There?s little point going to a standard big name home insurer looking for specialist flood insurance cover, as they cannot deal with it.? They are geared up for normal homes with normal risks, flood insurance does not come under that ? it is unusual and has an extremely high cost per claim ? it is bad for business if you are selling standard policies as it can make losses.

Go to www.thepropertyinsurer.co.uk and click on the flood insurance button. After reading the advice (if you like) you can compare three flood insurance providers on their prices and policy coverage after filling in a short form that takes around 2-minutes.

The specialist flood insurers may call you or email you to ask additional questions about your property or any previous flood claims and you should take the call. They are asking questions to try and reduce the cost of the insurance to you.

Once you have the quotes, choose the one best for you and buy it, it is as simple as that to get good specialist flood insurance ? and you?ll not find it any easier anywhere else.

"Cheers": The Day Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson Ditched and Did Shrooms

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Starring on the classic sitcom "Cheers" brought lots of joy to Ted Danson - but ditching work once led to what he calls "the worst day of my life."

In a fantastic oral history of the NBC series in the new GQ, Danson says he once played hooky with Woody Harrelson, George Wendt, and John Ratzenberger.

"Shelley and Rhea were carrying that week's episode, and the guys were just, ?Let's play hooky.' We'd never done anything wrong before. John had a boat, so we met at Marina del Rey at 8 A.M. We all called in sick, and Jimmy caught on and was so pissed."

"Woody and I were already stoned, and Woody said, ?You want to try some mushrooms?' I'd never had them, so I'm handed this bag and I took a fistful," Danson continued. "On our way to Catalina, we hit the tail end of a hurricane, and even people who were sober were getting sick. Woody and I thought we were going to die for three hours. I sat next to George, and every sixty seconds or so he'd poke me and go, ?Breathe.' And I'd come back to life."

Danson and Harrelson weren't the only ones who overindulged, according to producer Dan Shannon, now an executive producer on "Modern Family." He said Kelsey Grammer would "ooze into the studio, his life all out of sorts."

"Jimmy would say ?Action,' and he would snap into Frasier and expound in this very erudite dialogue and be pitch-perfect," Shannon said. "And Jimmy would yell ?Cut!' and he would ooze back into Kelsey - glazed-over eyes, half asleep, going through whatever he was going through. It was the most amazing transformation I've ever seen."

Long also talked to the magazine about how the show kept the will-they-or-won't-they dynamic alive between her character, Diane, and Danson's Sam.

"Our audience was so tuned in to every move, because the flirting between Sam and Diane during the first season was totally outrageous," she said. "There was talk about 'Would it be right to advance the relationship, or could that condemn the relationship?' I put my two cents in - big surprise - and said, 'In a real relationship, you take two steps forward, one step back. So just because we take two steps forward and get all the benefit from that doesn't mean we can't go back or to the side.' Ultimately, that's what worked."

Wigan manager Martinez charged over ref criticism

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:55 a.m. ET Sept. 26, 2012

LONDON (AP) -The English Football Association has charged Wigan manager Roberto Martinez for publicly criticizing a referee.

Martinez was unhappy about a penalty being awarded to Manchester United, and about Danny Welbeck avoiding a red card in Wigan's 4-0 loss on Sept. 15.

The FA says Martinez was charged over "media comments which implied that the match referee and/or match officials in general are motivated by bias and/or brought the game into disrepute."

Martinez described Welbeck's challenge on Wigan forward Franco di Santo as "completely reckless," claiming there were tackles "if they had been the other way round ... would have been a couple of red cards."

Martinez said that at Old Trafford, Wigan "don't seem to be measured in the same manner as the team at home."

Technology News: Apple Map VS Google Map - RightWorks

If you have not known it yet, Apple withdrew its support for Google applications as Google become their primary competition. With the ongoing comparison of the iOS line of operating systems against Android, Apple decided to remove all of its applications that are Google powered. These would have to include YouTube, and of course, the Google Map.

Now that the iPhone 5 has been released, it no longer bears the Google Maps as one of its applications. Apple now has its own innovative map to cater the same kind of assistance for finding locations and directions. However, knowing that both serve the same purpose, it can never be helped that there will always be comparisons. So, it is good to take both maps in closer look.

The Google Map has already been proven to work for years of usage by so many mobile map users. As compared to the Apple Map that has just been released along with the iPhone 5, things are still going to be under some tests. The same in purpose and feature, you can still cite the significant differences found in each maps.

Just recently, reports were made by so many iOS 6 users that their Apple map is inaccurate. These inaccuracies are pointing to London being found in Ontario, Canada and not in England. There were also reports that some buildings and bridges look distorted as opposed to how they should be. These are inaccuracies in addition to Google Map?s advantage over information provision. This is no surprise since Google has more to integrate with mapping.

It is reasonable to point out that the Apple map is still under the process of constant innovation. So, to ask if the use of this map is worth all the risks would be too early for anyone to do so.

Property Management and Pets: Most Aggressive Dog Breeds | The ...

image via flickr by carterse

Knowledge is power when it comes to pet policies. You may be a dog lover, maybe even a lifelong dog owner, but naturally this doesn?t make you a veterinary expert. Thus, it?s important to know a bit about dog breeds to determine if you should let a tenant have a certain pet, in order to protect yourself and the rest of your tenants.

Meeting each pet before agreeing to a lease is a good idea, even with a liberal pet policy in your units. Weight limits for dogs are a smart in terms of general damage a big and energetic dog could wreak on your property, inside and out. But a 10 year old, mopey golden retriever is unlikely to be a huge concern. When you do meet the pet, you should not only check its general disposition, but have the renter prove to you that the pet follows commands well.

However, some dog breeds you should beware of generally include the following:

  • The dogs most often banned around the world include American bulldogs, Mastiffs, Wolfdogs, Boerboels, Dogo Argentino, Presa Canario, Fila Brasileiro, Japanese Tosa Inu, and the American Pit Bull Terrier.
  • Dogs that generally have a bad rap are Pit Bulls, Dobermans, and Rottweilers.
  • Schnauzers, old English Sheepdogs, and Shar Peis are not particularly friendly.
  • Dogs that don?t normally get singledout because of their size but can be aggressive include Chow Chows, Llasa Apsos. Jack Russell Terriers, Papillons, Dachshunds, Cocker Spaniels, Bull Terriers, Pekingeses, Beagles, and Chihuahuas. Small dogs can be aggressive and bite too, so just because a dog is small doesn?t mean its not a risk.
  • Mutts unfortunately have no recipe for disposition.
  • For perspective, some dogs that are known to be friendly or docile include Bassett Hounds, Golden Retrievers, Labradors, Siberian Huskies and Greyhounds.

Also, ask the renter also for the particular dog?s history. While saving a rescue dog is a good deed, if the dog has experienced trauma, it may have behavioral issues and possibly even be temperamental towards a certain race or gender.

Generally speaking, having an allowance for pets will increase your pool of potential renters and even the amount you can charge for the apartment. But not every pet is built equally and some will be a perfect fit while others would make for trouble. So creating a list of breeds you would not allow and spelling out your policies in the lease and on your website is a good idea.

The Weirdest Thing People Hate About the iPhone 5

The Weirdest Thing People Hate About the iPhone 5There are many issues one can reasonably have with the iPhone 5. That overpriced dock connector. An inexcusably bad Maps app. Even the fact that it's a little, well, boring. But there's no way Apple could've anticipated this particular backlash:

That's right. Just two days in, and iPhone 5 buyers have already decided that its key engineering triumph?it's not nearly as heavy as it looks?is, in fact, a major flaw. Maybe they don't realize that you have to actively try to break it with a drop. Or that long-term, less pocket weight is a blessing, not a curse. Or who knows? Maybe the lightness of being really is unbearable after all.

How The Best Brands Create The Best Reputation Online | Veribo blog

Social Media For Your Reputation Online

?

Learning how to create and maintain your reputation online?is a vital part of your own success and cannot be overemphasized. Even a small business or owner managed business that is serious about online business needs to utilize all avenues of online reputation management and markeing to achieve the best results.

?

?

A good online reputation manager will tell you that the first goal of excellent social media is to research your target audience. That means listening to their needs, finding out what they want, and most importantly, finding out where your target audience can be found. Leveraging social media is one of the fastest ways to enhance your reputation online.

?

In depth analysis of your brand and your target audience online will enable you to continually develop new strategies and explore opportunities as they present themselves on the constantly changing World Wide Web. It?s not enough to just assume that ?everyone? is on Facebook and Twitter. Depending on the demographics of your target audience, you may have to place the focus of your social media campaign on another social network or drive your campaign in a different direction.

?

Seeing how top brands get it right you will notice that they only start a marketing campaign once they have the right analytics in place. Be wary, as a small business owner of any reputation management company who is able to get going on your campaign within an hour of your placing an order. Mass tweeting and untargeted Facebook status updates will do your business no good if the wrong people are seeing them. They may even do some damage.

?

Define Your Brand Online

?

Defining your target market when it comes to social media optimization means identifying the influencers in your market. The type of person who ?likes? and by extension, ?shares? your Facebook page is more important that getting mass numbers from a bulk order company. A good online reputation management company will always look at finding the right people who can spread your service or product message rather than taking a stab at it by looking for huge quantities of people who may not be interested and who have no influence in their community or demographic.

?

The Value Of Online Reputation Management

?

Social analytics are able to determine the users within your target market who are most likely to share information and in doing so influence their networks. Analysis of blogs and Facebook posts is just one way of tracking trends, keywords and finding out more about your target audience before you start your online reputation campaign using social media.

?

The most important tool that a good online reputation management company can bring to your business is the culture of analysis and focus; learning about your target market before you let loose on the internet.

At True Value show, women customers top of mind | The Salt Lake ...

(Scott Sommerdorf | The Salt Lake Tribune) True Value Hardware stores are holding one of their big twice-annual trade shows at the Salt Palace with vendors showing all sorts of new hardware that will soon be available, Friday, September 21, 2012.

True Value retail outlets are no longer your father?s basic hardware store.

That fact was obvious Friday as the Chicago-based cooperative brought 3,500 retailers representing 1,500 stores together with 5,000 vendors and exhibitors for its 2012 Fall Market trade show at the Salt Palace (which is not open to the public).

True Value serves as a cooperative buying organization that allows independent hardware store owners to compete with big-box stores by purchasing in bulk and marketing the entire store line.

These traditional retailers of nuts and bolts, garden equipment, paint and tools are changing to meet the needs of more women customers and younger shoppers who use social media and often hunt for products online.

"Female shoppers make 70 percent of all shopping decisions and now 40 percent of the customers in hardware stores are women," said Chris Taylor, director of corporate communications. "She wants inspiration, new ideas and a high level of service."

Company President and CEO Lyle Heidemann, put it another way:

"The competition is getting tougher, more stores are carrying products that we sell, and the consumer is getting younger and less familiar with the traditional hardware store," he said.

Nontraditional hardware store products such as bobblehead gnomes and lighthouses for garden decorations, and colorful stepping stones with butterfly and bird themes have become a draw.

So might a line of solar-powered electrical supplies products at Friday?s show that True Value?s Mary Shelton called the "home and grave" line because they include cemetery markers, crosses, angels and roses.

Mike Clark, chief merchandiser for True Value Hardware, said the growth of pet, farm and ranch, and automotive products has been impressive in recent years. Carrying products for pet owners is important, considering that pets are a $31 billion a year industry, excluding veterinarian fees, he said.

story continues below

That?s why division Vice President Kevin Rewerts showed off several aisles of pet products covering 4,200 square feet of space on the Salt Palace floor. There were lines of holistic and organic pet food, and racks filled with all sorts of dog toys.

Nearby, displays of live baby chicks, a pony and her baby, and three labrador retrievers drew the attention of retailers looking to stock their stores in 2013 with pet and farm products.

This isn?t to say that the show ignores traditional hardware store customers.

"We want to bring customers the latest and greatest," Taylor said. "Retailers are buying to stock their stores to appeal to do-it-yourselfers who love to tackle small projects. Our stores are located all over the country and are community based. We are known for service and expertise."

Traditional products such as home and garden, paint, light bulbs, tools and nuts and bolts were also well represented at the show.

There was even a new $20 screwdriver, the Swift Driver, designed so it continues to screw no matter which way you are turning, making it faster and more efficient than older models.

Weber Grills reintroduced its Spirit Line, a smaller and slightly less-expensive gas grill designed for a market that might include an apartment or condo owner.

Afghanistan bans Pakistani newspapers

Roberto Schmidt / Pool / EPA

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, right, meets Mahmood Khan Achakzai, a Pakistani politician and leader of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, at the presidential palace in Kabul on Saturday. Afghanistan has set in motion plans to ban the entry of all newspapers from Pakistan.

By NBC News and news services

Afghanistan has banned all Pakistani newspapers over what security officials say is anti-government propaganda aimed at Kabul, the Ministry of Interior said on Saturday, in a move likely to worsen already tense cross-border ties.

The deputy interior minister in Afghanistan is ordering the Zone One border police commander to stop all the Pakistani newspapers coming from Pakistan through Torkham borders.

The statement says the Pakistani newspapers are an easy source for the Taliban to convey their message, which can change the minds of Afghans.

The main provinces where the papers are distributed are the Nangarhar, Kunar and Noristan provinces.

Pakistani newspapers are usually filled with statements that the Afghan government does not properly represent its people and that its NATO-led allies are "occupying" the country, rather than offering security support, Ihsanuddin Taheri, an interior ministry spokesman, told Reuters.

Some papers have also published speeches by Taliban insurgency leaders, he added, at a time when the government is trying to lure the Taliban into nascent peace talks aimed at ending the 11-year Afghan war.

"We totally reject these statements and the ban is to show them this," said Taheri, adding the nationwide ban could only be reversed by a ministerial decree.

Ties between Afghanistan and Pakistan have been strained by months of cross-border shelling that officials in Kabul have blamed on Pakistan's military. Islamabad accuses Afghanistan of failing to stop anti-government militants operating from mountain havens on Kabul's side of the border.?

On Thursday, the Afghan foreign minister told the U.N. Security Council in New York that diplomatic ties with Pakistan were under threat.

NBC's Atia Abawi and Reuters contributed to this story.

In Brazil, Attacking the Forest to Save It

Saving the Amazon rainforest may not look like what we expect

amazon-deforestationAMAZON DEFORESTATION: Can giving locals ownership lower the risks of cutting or burning down trees in the Amazon rainforest? Image: NASA image courtesy the MODIS Rapid Response Team, Goddard Space Flight Center

Editor's note: The following is an excerpt from? Visit Sunny Chernobyl: And Other Adventures In the World's Most Polluted Places, by Andrew Blackwell (Rodale, 2012).

The highway in the dark as the kilometers ticked by. We were driving south from Santar?m on BR-163, one of the few highways to cut across the Brazilian Amazon. This close to Santar?m, the road was paved and free of potholes. Further south it is unpaved, becoming almost impassable in the rainy season.

Locations on the road south of Santar?m are found not by signs or named roads but by their kilometer number. My friend Adam and I were headed for a turnoff somewhere in the low 70s. There, we would meet some people who spent their days ripping trees out of a protected rainforest. Yet as much as I would have loved to befriend a secretive band of lumber pirates, I had had no such luck. Somehow, it was all legal.

Dawn brightened by increments behind the tinted windows of the car. The Amazon canopy flew past, mist rising among the treetops. We were inside a vast hydrological pump, which lifts and distributes an ocean's worth of water across the Americas, shaping and driving weather patterns around the continent. Or rather, we were at its edge. To our right was the boundary of the Tapaj?s National Forest, the trees lining the shoulder of the road. To the left, though, the vista modulated between forest and rangeland, then would fall away in the flat blankness of soy field: mile-long rectangles of bare earth. Gil?a scruffy Amazonian windsurfer whom Adam and I had hired to be our translator and guide?squinted through his window, looking for kilometer markers.

If you're interested in deforestation, you go where the action is. So I'd come to Brazil, where I hoped I would be able to catch the bleeding edge of a booming economy in midsweep across the rainforest. I wanted to see the worst of the worst.

But I was a few years late. When it comes to leveling the Amazon, Brazil has been falling down on the job. Gone are the go-go days of the mid-2000s, when more than ten thousand square miles of rainforest could disappear in a single year. That number has since fallen by more than two thirds, to less than 2,500 square miles in 2011, which is the lowest rate of destruction since the country began keeping records in the late 1980s. And all this at a time when Brazil's economy has been growing steadily?a situation that would normally have resulted in more deforestation.

The most convincing explanations for this all have to do with economic factors that are beyond anyone's control. But many people are hoping?and the Brazilian government wants you to believe?that the lull in the destruction is also attributable, at least in part, to recent innovations in the monitoring and management of forests. Which is why we were headed now for the Tapaj?s National Forest.

We reached the logging camp at around seven in the morning. The loggers were meeting in a bare, wooden room in the main building. Men and women in hard hats and work clothes stood in a circle and made announcements. There was laughter and applause. They joined hands and said a prayer, looking not at all piratical. Then we went out and got into the back of a large, covered truck that bounced and shuddered down a rutted dirt road in the direction of the Tapaj?s River, into the heart of the national forest. We were riding with the Amb? project.

Walmart to stop selling Amazon's Kindle line of readers and tablets

Walmart to stop selling Amazon's Kindle line of readers and tabletsIt's a lonely world when you've no storefronts to call your own. Shortly after Target decided it best to halt the sales of Amazon's Kindle products, it's being reported that Walmart is following suit. A quote obtained by Reuters suggests that Wally World's bigwigs won't be carrying Amazon tablets and e-readers "beyond the existing inventory and purchase commitments." And yes, that includes "all Kindle models current and recently announced." No actual reasoning was given beyond the conventional company line, but one has to wonder if Walmart isn't somehow considering getting into some of the businesses that it was previously helping Amazon push.

It's also taken a plunge with Vudu, as it's offering an in-store disc-to-digital UltraViolet conversion as well. You might say that Walmart would never, ever start hawking its own e-readers, but crazier things have happened -- Best Buy has an entire brand devoted to in-house goods, and Amazon itself has expanded from an online storefront for laundry detergent and bestselling novels to a bona fide hardware mainstay.

Walmart to stop selling Amazon's Kindle line of readers and tablets originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 12:32:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Israel lawsuit pits 'Kippa Man' against Batman

JERUSALEM (AP) ? DC Comics and Marvel are suing a Jerusalem vendor for selling Jewish skullcaps, or kippas, adorned with unauthorized images of crime-fighting superheroes Batman and Spiderman, a lawyer representing the comics giants said.

Lawyer Chagay Netzer said the "Kippa Man" store was violating the intellectual property rights of both companies. DC Comics and Marvel are each demanding 25,500 U.S. dollars in damages and expect the store to stop selling the kippas.

The popular downtown store draws hordes of tourists with its colorful skullcaps, many featuring cartoon characters or sports insignia.

The separate lawsuits were served last week. The shop's owner declined to comment.

The Associated Press obtained copies of the lawsuits listing DC and Marvel as plaintiffs on Wednesday.

Common Problems That Can Develop in Automotive Air Conditioning

Last updated 21 hours ago

Nothing is more uncomfortable or inconvenient than a broken down air conditioner in the middle of the summer. Fortunately, you can use these auto repair tips to catch problems in your car?s air conditioner to keep the cold air blowing as long as you need it. Early prevention and maintenance can also help you avoid many of the problems associated with damaged automotive air conditioning systems, including:

  • Uncomfortable Temperatures ? Your air conditioner won?t be much use if it only blows warm air. Thankfully, an uncomfortable temperature is one of the simplest air conditioning system problems in the book. The issue is usually caused by a low volume of refrigerant. Have your auto repair technician check for reservoir leaks when your refrigerant is being refilled, as an unrepaired leak will result in temperature control problems throughout the summer.
    ?
  • Low Airflow ? Some air conditioners refuse to blow straight on target. If your air conditioner is suffering this problem, then you likely have a broken vacuum supply line. This series of tubes helps to lead air to the right vent or exhaust. Ask your mechanic about vacuum supply line issues if your fan is working but your passengers aren?t receiving any air.
    ?
  • Excess Noise ? The soft whirr of fans is typically the only sound an automotive air conditioner should make. In fact, additional noises from your vehicle?s air conditioner may indicate a serious problem. For example, these loud noises may be a result of a broken down compressor or a corroded fan belt. Keep your air conditioner components in good repair to avoid these noisy problems.
    ?
  • Offensive Odors ? You may notice strange odors coming from an aging car?s air conditioner. This smell is likely the result of mold and bacteria that have taken up resident in the evaporator. Let a team of professionals wash away these smells with specialty chemicals that won?t harm the engine.

The experts at Dekalb Tire and Automotive Repair can have your automotive repairs finished quickly. We pride ourselves on our flawless repairs and great customer service. Learn more about our company and our technicians today by calling our office at (678) 954-1728.

A former head of the department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and a deputy assistant attorney general in Justice's criminal division in Washington left the department upon the report's release ? the first by retirement, the second by resignation.

In the 471-page report, Inspector General Michael Horowitz referred more than a dozen people for possible department disciplinary action for their roles in Operation Fast and Furious and a separate, earlier probe known as Wide Receiver, undertaken during the George W. Bush administration. A former acting deputy attorney general and the head of the criminal division were criticized for actions and omissions related to operations subsequent to and preceding Fast and Furious.

The report did not criticize Attorney General Eric Holder, but said lower-level officials should have briefed him about the investigation much earlier.

The report found no evidence that Holder was informed about the Fast and Furious operation before Jan. 31, 2011, or that the attorney general was told about the much-disputed gun-walking tactic employed by the ATF.

Gun-walking was an experimental tactic, barred under long-standing department policy. ATF agents in Arizona allowed suspected "straw purchasers," in these cases believed to be working for Mexican drug gangs, to leave Phoenix-area gun stores with weapons in order to track them and bring charges against gun-smuggling kingpins who long had eluded prosecution, but they lost track of most of the guns.

The experimental operations were a response to widespread criticisms of the agency's anti-smuggling efforts. Because of thin ATF staffing and weak penalties, the traditional strategy of arresting suspected straw buyers as soon as possible had failed to stop the flow of tens of thousands of guns to Mexico ? more than 68,000 in the past five years.

The inspector general found fault with the work of the senior ATF leadership, the ATF staff and U.S. attorney's office in Phoenix and senior officials of Justice's criminal division in Washington. He also said that poor internal information-gathering and drafting at Justice and ATF caused the department to initially misinform Congress about Fast and Furious, beginning with a Feb. 4, 2011, letter.

"The inspector general's report confirms findings by Congress' investigation of a near total disregard for public safety in Operation Fast and Furious," said Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which has been investigating Operation Fast and Furious since early 2011. Horowitz is to testify before Issa's panel Thursday.

During the investigation President Barack Obama ordered Holder to withhold from the committee, under executive privilege, some documents describing how the department responded to the panel. The Republican-controlled House voted to hold Holder in contempt and has authorized a civil lawsuit to make the administration turn over the documents. Horowitz said he was not denied access to any of the documents.

Two of the 2,000 weapons thought to have been acquired by illicit buyers in the Fast and Furious investigation were recovered at the scene of a shootout that claimed the life of U.S. border agent Brian Terry. About 1,400 of the total have yet to be recovered.

Holder noted in a statement that the report confirmed his assertions that the flawed strategies were driven by field agents without his knowledge or approval and that department did not set out to misinform Congress.

He said the report's disciplinary recommendations are being pursued and "we now have two men in custody and we will continue to aggressively pursue the remaining fugitives to ensure justice for Agent Terry, his family and his fellow law enforcement agents."

Fast and Furious has produced charges against 20 gun traffickers, 14 of whom have pleaded guilty so far.

One of those criticized in the report, former ATF acting director Kenneth Melson, who headed that agency during the Fast and Furious investigation, retired upon release of the report.

"Melson made too many assumptions about the case," the report stated. "Melson should have asked basic questions about the investigation, including how public safety was being protected."

Melson responded in a written statement: "While I firmly disagree with many of the speculative assumptions, conclusions and characterizations in the inspector general's report, as the acting director of the agency I was ultimately responsible for the actions of each employee."

Another of those criticized, Justice Department career attorney Jason Weinstein, resigned. Weinstein was a deputy assistant attorney general in Justice's criminal division in Washington.

"Weinstein was the most senior person in the department in April and May 2010 who was in a position to identify the similarity between the inappropriate tactics used in Operations Wide Receiver and Fast and Furious," the report said. ATF agents in Arizona conducted Wide Receiver in 2006 and 2007 and began Fast and Furious in October 2009.

Weinstein's lawyer, Michael Bromwich, called the report's criticism "profoundly wrong" and "deeply flawed."

The report said that a cover memo reviewed by Weinstein for a wiretap application in Fast and Furious "clearly suggests" that ATF agents had allowed a known illicit gun purchaser to continue his illegal activities for a gun-trafficking ring selling weapons to a Mexican drug cartel.

Weinstein's review of the cover memo should have caused him to question operational details of Fast and Furious, the report stated.

In response, Weinstein's lawyer said that before reviewing any Fast and Furious wiretaps, Weinstein had been assured by ATF Deputy Assistant Director William McMahon that guns were being aggressively interdicted.

Among others the report singled out for criticism were former acting Deputy Attorney General Gary Grindler; Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer, who heads the criminal division; Arizona U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke; and Holder's own former deputy chief of staff, Monty Wilkinson.

The report said:

?Wilkinson should have promptly informed Holder of the fact that two guns found at the scene of Terry's slaying were among the 2,000 illicitly acquired weapons in Operation Fast and Furious.

?Grindler relied on the FBI to investigate the Terry killing. That reliance was misplaced, given that the bureau did not have the responsibility to determine whether errors in ATF's investigation led to the weapons ending up at the murder scene.

?Breuer should have promptly informed Deputy Attorney General James Cole or Holder about the gun-walking problems in the earlier gun probe, Operation Wide Receiver.

The inspector general said he found no evidence that former Attorney General Michael Mukasey, who took office late in the Bush administration after Wide Receiver was ended, was ever informed that it used gun-walking.

Once allegations of gun-walking surfaced, the Justice Department waited 10 months before withdrawing an incorrect letter to Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley in early 2011 denying that gun-walking had taken place. Grassley is the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

A May 2011 Justice Department letter to Grassley said that "it remains our understanding that ATF's Operation Fast and Furious did not knowingly permit straw buyers to take guns into Mexico."

The inspector general said that by May, senior department officials knew or should have known that ATF had in many instances allowed straw purchasers to buy firearms knowing that someone else would transport them to Mexico. The report also found that the department should not have provided testimony in June 2011 before Issa's committee that created ambiguity over whether the department was still defending its Feb. 4 and May 2 letters.

Speaking to reporters at ATF headquarters, acting director B. Todd Jones said the agency is already implementing some of the report's recommendations and there are no gun-walking operations going on.

"We are recalibrating how we do business at ATF," Jones said. "Everyone in the current crew knows that that is not an acceptable investigative technique unless I know about it, and I don't know about any."
