China says US-based hackers target its websites

BEIJING (AP) ? China's military said Thursday that overseas computer hackers targeted two of its websites an average of 144,000 times per month last year, with almost two-thirds of the attacks originating in the United States.

The claim from Defense Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng follows accusations last week by American cybersecurity company Mandiant that Chinese military-backed cyberspies infiltrated overseas networks and stole massive amounts of data from U.S. companies and other entities. China denied the allegations, and its military said it has never supported any hacking activity.

Geng told reporters at a monthly news conference that an average of 62.9 percent of the attacks on the Defense Ministry's official website and that of its newspaper, the People's Liberation Army Daily, came from the U.S.

"Like other countries, China faces a serious threat from hacking and is one of the primary victims of hacking in the world," Geng said. "Numbers of attacks have been on the rise in recent years."

Geng attacked the Mandiant report, which blamed hacking on the People's Liberation Army's Shanghai-based Unit 61398, as "unprofessional and not in accordance with the facts." He also criticized the U.S. military's cyber command for impeding international efforts at controlling hacking.

The Mandiant report was widely praised by cybersecurity professionals interviewed by The Associated Press, who said it provided the most detailed picture yet of China's state-sponsored hacking efforts.

Vimeo announces 'Looks' feature, now lets users add visual effects to videos

Whether it was inspired by the recent Instagram craze or not, Vimeo's new "Looks" have a pretty good chance of being welcomed with open arms (and eyes) by the video creators on its well-known platform. In partnership with Vivoom, the company announced today that it's bringing over 500 visual effects to the service as part of its Enhancer toolbox, giving folks the ability to easily add some flavor to their own video productions straight from a web browser. Furthermore, Vimeo's made it possible to preview these filters in real-time, as well as letting them be somewhat customizable by implementing various editing options, such as trimming and adjusting the intensity of each one. Vimeo also says the novel feature will be able to make recommendations based on "technical analysis of the user's video and social data," -- in other words, the more you use it, the more likely it is to learn your very own visual preferences.

Thanks to Vivoom's 16-year experience in the video effects field, Vimeo tells us it only expects the current Looks selection to grow and deliver more of the "highest quality effects," adding that the main goal is for each and every user to "find what's best for their personal needs." Speaking of which, all Vimeo account holders can play with the new Looks at no cost for the next 90 days, although the company wasn't quite clear as to what we can expect after that period comes to an end.

Update: Vimeo has reached out to let us know that following the 90-day trial, the Looks will cost 99 cents each.

Video games take aim at dyslexia

Controversial study suggests attention problem at root of reading disorder

By Bruce Bower

Web edition: February 28, 2013

Children with dyslexia may read better after playing action video games that stress mayhem, not literacy, a contested study suggests.

Playing fast-paced Wii video games for 12 hours over two weeks markedly increased the reading speed of 7- to 13-year-old kids with dyslexia, with no loss of reading accuracy, says a team led by psychologist Andrea Facoetti of the University of Padua, Italy. Reading gains lasted at least two months after the video game sessions. The gains matched or exceeded previously reported effects of reading-focused programs for dyslexia, the researchers report online February 28 in Current Biology.

?These results are clear enough to say that action video games are able to improve reading abilities in children with dyslexia,? Facoetti says. Although the new study includes only 20 children with dyslexia, its results build on earlier evidence that many poor readers have difficulty focusing on items within arrays, Facoetti holds. By strengthening the ability to monitor central and peripheral objects in chaotic scenes, he says, action video games give kids with dyslexia a badly needed tool for tracking successive letters in written words.

But evidence for Facoetti?s conclusions is shaky, asserts psychologist Nicola Brunswick of Middlesex University in London. The researchers tested word reading ability two months later but failed to test reading comprehension, she says. What?s more, they did so with a mere six of 10 kids who played the action video games. ?

Ten participants in a comparison group played video games that didn?t require constant scanning of frenzied scenes. These kids showed no reading improvement. All games in the study came from a Wii product called Rayman Raving Rabbids.

Action video games deserve scrutiny as possible dyslexia fighters, says cognitive neuroscientist Bruce McCandliss of Vanderbilt University in Nashville. But the new study doesn?t necessarily prove their worth in allaying severe reading problems, he says. For instance, children made many errors when reading nonsense words before and after playing action video games, although they did so in less time following the intervention. ?

Action video games may particularly help bad readers of straightforward languages such as Italian, in which written letters usually stand for single sounds (SN: 3/31/01, p. 205). Facoetti?s group ? Padua colleagues Sandro Franceschini, Simone Gori and Simona Viola, as well as Milena Ruffino and Massimo Molteni of Scientific Institute E. Medea in Lecco, Italy ? plans to study action video games as a dyslexia treatment for speakers of English and other tough-to-read languages, in which written letters can correspond to multiple sounds.

NFL combine: Can teams trust Manti Te'o?

INDIANAPOLIS ? The most anticipated and attended news conference in the 27-year history of the NFL scouting combine ended with a thank-you.

From Manti Te'o.

Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o answers a question during a news conference at the NFL football scouting combine in Indianapolis on Saturday.

Michael Conroy, AP

Yes, that's right, the Notre Dame linebacker/unwitting participant in a "Catfish" hoax thanked us, his family, his university and all of his supporters for helping him through this uniquely trying time. No hints of anger, bitterness, frustration or annoyance.

How can you not like a guy like that?

If Te'o wanted to convince the public that he's a sincere, grounded young man, he accomplished that objective during a 14 1/2-minute, no-holds-barred Q-and-A on Saturday with about 200 media members who staked out their spots as if positioning themselves for a rock concert (or a free meal).

This was Te'o's first group interview since the bizarre story of his virtual girlfriend came to light in mid-January, and he handled it with aplomb. Of course, the greater challenge is to convince NFL teams that he's the high-character person we all thought he was before Deadspin broke the story that shrouded Te'o in doubt.

"They want to be able to trust their player," Te'o acknowledged. "You don't want to invest in somebody you can't trust. ... I understand where they're coming from."

When he spoke to the media at 2:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, Te'o had met with two teams formally: Green Bay and Houston. He said he had 18 more interviews to go.

Other teams had met with him informally, and every single one had asked about the incident, as you'd expect. The amount of time spent on it varied.

Relatively speaking, what Te'o did ? falling victim to a hoax, then embellishing the story through the media ? was benign. He didn't commit any crimes. He didn't break any laws. He didn't disparage any groups of people.

(Shortly after Te'o spoke, Georgia linebacker Alec Ogletree appeared at the same podium. Maybe one-fourth as many reporters showed up to grill him about his arrest for DUI earlier this month.)

But Te'o's actions generated an unhealthy dose of skepticism among the people who matter most ? his potential employers.

San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh had said earlier in the week that he couldn't trust someone who wasn't truthful. Not that any other coach would cite Judge Judy as his inspiration, as Harbaugh did, but his sentiment was representative of the way the rest of the league's decision-makers feel.

"When you lie in Judge Judy's courtroom, it's over," Harbaugh said. "Your credibility is completely lost. You have no chance of winning that case. So I learned that from her. It's very powerful, and true. Because if somebody does lie to you, how can you ever trust anything they ever say after that?"

Harbaugh then was asked if that made Te'o undraftable. Harbaugh said it wouldn't, perhaps an indication that the incident won't affect Te'o's draft stock as much as some believe, if at all. (Of course, it's easy for Harbaugh to say ? the 49ers are set at inside linebacker.)

The bigger issue for NFL teams might be Te'o's poor performance in the BCS title game against Alabama. After a stellar season in which he was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, Te'o missed multiple tackles in Notre Dame's lopsided loss. He looked nothing like the first-round pick he was projected to be at the time.

Was Te'o distracted by his chaotic personal life, which few knew about at the time? Or did the Crimson Tide, loaded with NFL-bound players, expose him?

To his credit, Te'o made no excuses Saturday. "That's all on me," he said of his struggles against Alabama.

Unfortunately, the episode hasn't affected only Te'o. He said the toughest moment was receiving a phone call from his sister, who told him their family had to sneak into their house because so many reporters were camped outside. Te'o said he felt frustrated because he couldn't do anything to help them, embarrassed because he had besmirched the family name.

"You treasure your last name," Te'o said. "That's what you hold dear. To see your last name everywhere and know I represented my family and all my cousins and aunties and uncles ..."

Given his family's suffering, no one would blame Te'o if he sued Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the perpetrator of the hoax. But that's not Te'o.

"That's the worst thing you could do," he said. "Both families are going through chaos."

So what's Te'o's approach? To forgive.

"If you forgive," he said, "you'll get the majority of the blessings."

Te'o can only hope at least one NFL team sees it the same way.

NOTE

USC center Khaled Holmes (Mater Dei High) was unable to work out Saturday after injuring a pectoral muscle during the bench press Friday. However, Holmes said the injury was "just a strain" and that he would be fine. USC's pro day is March 27.

North Texas sports forecast provides gloomy outlook

by JOE TRAHAN

Bio | Email | Follow: @joetrahan

WFAA

Posted on February 17, 2013 at 11:48 PM

Updated Sunday, Feb 17 at 11:56 PM

DALLAS ? The winds of change have been blowing strong over the North Texas pro sports landscape.

Rewind just two years ago:

  • The region hosted a Super Bowl
  • The Mavericks won an NBA title
  • The Rangers made back-to-back World Series trips

"We may look back at that period and think that's the golden years in this city for sports," said Norm Hitzges, sports talk host on SportsRadio 1310 The Ticket.

But now, storm clouds are gathering. So ? with the help of a trio of veteran media members ? we've put together a forecast for the calendar year.

COWBOYS FORECAST

  • A dense pea-soup type fog; a fog so thick, it makes you wonder if you're going in the right direction.

"With Jerry involved there's always a recipe for potential bad weather," said longtime Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist Jim Reeves.

The Cowboys have salary cap issues. The power structure at Valley Ranch has come in question (again). And with an aging group of core players, Cowboys Nation can only wonder where their team is headed.

"You know the old Texas line about 'If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes and it'll change?'" Hitzges asked. "Well if you don't like what's going on at Valley Ranch this season, wait five minutes... it'll change. Who's running this club?"

Dallas Morning News columnist Rick Gosselin is sticking with the weather theme.

"Its been a fairly dense fog for the last 17 years," he said. "You have to draft. In a salary cap world, you have to draft well. You can't have flat tires like the Cowboys have had on draft day."

RANGERS FORECAST

  • There is dark cloud cover for the Rangers, thanks to performance-enhancing drug allegations surrounding Nelson Cruz.

But this team has dealt with off-field issues before, so there's a possibility for a clearing trend.

"I do think we've got some fair weather coming for the Rangers still," Reeves said.

Instead trying to fill the power void after losing Josh Hamilton, the Rangers will have to embrace a different way to win. More pitching and defense will be required.

Even so, with what the Rangers brain trust has built, they provide the area's best chance for post-season success.

"That's what Jon Daniels and Nolan Ryan have been trying to do, is build that farm system so they can bring players in when necessary, and plug 'em into those spots and those roles, and they've got some winning caliber players they can bring up," Reeves said.

MAVERICKS FORECAST

  • It's stormy weather for the Mavericks.

Channel 8 meteorologist Steve McCauley likes to talk about "breaking through the cap" to allow for rain. Well, the Mavericks' attempt to manage the salary cap has forced them to have to weather the storm.

"This club does not have any basic youth to build on," Hitzges said. "The stars are getting old."

The Mavs are six games below .500 with 30 to go, and it will take a miracle finish to make the post-season.

And as Dirk Nowitzki continues to age, getting a "big fish" free agent will only get tougher.

"If you can't get the home town kid to come home, you're going to have a tough time getting a free agent to come in here with a descending Dirk," Gosselin said. "I just don't see where [Mavericks owner Mark] Cuban's going to go with this blueprint."

STARS FORECAST

  • We're forecasting partly cloudy skies for the Stars.

They've got some young talent with vets mixed in, and there's at least some hope here for a warming trend.

"If we can hang on through the winter here, there appear to be enough good kids coming here and new management that's really good, so there could be some sunny days ahead for the Stars," Hitzges said.

That's the hope across the local sportscape, because there's a significant streak in play here: At least one of the the Big Four North Texas pro teams has made the playoffs every year since 1990.

"I wonder if we're not in for a year in which we don't have anybody in the playoffs in this city," Hitzges mused.

So, with that as a backdrop, the silver lining in this mostly cloudy and gloomy forecast is this: The winds of change will blow.

It is North Texas, after all.

Taking the gamble out of DNA sequencing: How much can be learned in a large-scale experiment

Feb. 24, 2013 ? Two USC scientists have developed an algorithm that could help make DNA sequencing affordable enough for clinics -- and could be useful to researchers of all stripes.

Andrew Smith, a computational biologist at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, developed the algorithm along with USC graduate student Timothy Daley to help predict the value of sequencing more DNA, to be published in Nature Methods on February 24.

Extracting information from the DNA means deciding how much to sequence: sequencing too little and you may not get the answers you are looking for, but sequence too much and you will waste both time and money. That expensive gamble is a big part of what keeps DNA sequencing out of the hands of clinicians. But not for long, according to Smith.

"It seems likely that some clinical applications of DNA sequencing will become routine in the next five to 10 years," Smith said. "For example, diagnostic sequencing to understand the properties of a tumor will be much more effective if the right mathematical methods are in place."

The beauty of Smith and Daley's algorithm, which predicts the size and composition of an unseen population based on a small sample, lies in its broad applicability.

"This is one of those great instances where a specific challenge in our research led us to uncover a powerful algorithm that has surprisingly broad applications," Smith said.

Think of it: how often do scientists need to predict what they haven't seen based on what they have? Public health officials could use the algorithm to estimate the population of HIV positive individuals; astronomers could use it to determine how many exoplanets exist in our galaxy based on the ones they have already discovered; and biologists could use it to estimate the diversity of antibodies in an individual.

The mathematical underpinnings of the algorithm rely on a model of sampling from ecology known as capture-recapture. In this model, individuals are captured and tagged so that a recapture of the same individual will be known -- and the number of times each individual was captured can be used to make inferences about the population as a whole.

In this way scientists can estimate, for example, the number of gorillas remaining in the wild. In DNA sequencing, the individuals are the various different genomic molecules in a sample. However, the mathematical models used for counting gorillas don't work on the scale of DNA sequencing.

"The basic model has been known for decades, but the way it has been used makes it highly unstable in most applications. We took a different approach that depends on lots of computing power and seems to work best in large-scale applications like modern DNA sequencing," Daley said.

Scientists faced a similar problem in the early days of the human genome sequencing project. A mathematical solution was provided by Michael Waterman of USC, in 1988, which found widespread use. Recent advances in sequencing technology, however, require thinking differently about the mathematical properties of DNA sequencing data.

"Huge data sets required a novel approach. I'm very please it was developed here at USC," said Waterman.

This research was funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health National Human Genome Research Institute (R01 HG005238 and P50 HG002790).

Three-Year-Old Boy Who Can't Eat Anything Is Running Out of Time, Parents Say

Feb 23, 2013 7:00am

Michael Gonzalez is a 3-year-old Florida boy who apparently can?t eat any normal foods, and his parents say they are in a panic.

Michael drinks 20 to 30 bottles of prescription-only formula daily called Neocate Junior. He can?t eat apples or carrots or anything else that other kids his age eat, his mother, Jennifer Gonzalez, told ABC News affiliate KSTP.

But his predicament has gone from worrisome to alarming. Shortly after the formula maker, Nutricia, made changes to its packaging in August 2012, Michael suffered from severe vomiting and diarrhea, his parents say. Convinced that the company also changed the formula, his parents?have hoarded containers full of older stock, but it?s only safe to drink through October.

ABC

?That?s not OK, to tell me that my son has an expiration date,? Jennifer Gonzalez said.

Specialists have been examining Michael at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where the boy?s parents took him two weeks ago to get help.

Michael has been diagnosed with Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome, his parents said. The syndrome is not uncommon and is usually associated with an intolerance for milk or soy in babies six months to a year old, said Dr. Wesley Burks, chair of the pediatrics department at the University of North Carolina. Parents realize there?s a problem when their child gets diarrhea or vomits after feeding, he told ABC News.

It?s very rare for a child with the syndrome to be unable to eat many other foods aside from milk or soy, he said.

PHOTOS: Medical Marvels

?Usually if you can?t tolerate many foods, it?s related to your bowel itself,? said Burks, who has not treated Michael and did not comment on his case specifically. Most children grow out of the syndrome by age three to five, he added.

A child?s food allergies cost her parents on average $4,000, mainly due to lost income as parents switch jobs or work less, ABCNews.com reported in December.

From birth, Michael wasn?t like other babies, his parents said. He threw up after every feeding and his parents worried he?d starve.

?Babies are supposed to be happy. He wasn?t. Every time you fed him, he got worse. He was mad,? the boy?s mother told KSTP.

Michael?s parents discovered Neocate Junior when he was 11 months old, and it helped, they said ? until the company changed the packaging.

A spokeswoman for Nutricia cited a statement posted to the company?s website saying that the product formulation and ingredients for Neocate Junior Unflavored remained the same, though packaging graphics were redone in August. However, the company said it has received 14 similar complaints. Nutricia says it worked with the FDA to investigate the problem, and found that the formula recipe remained unchanged, said the spokeswoman, who asked not to be quoted by name.

The company released this statement about the case to ABCNews.com:

?We understand this is a challenging time for the Gonzalez family. We are connecting the family and their physician with the right clinical experts so they can partner on finding alternative nutritional solutions. This is in keeping with our mission to help provide nutritional solutions to children with very sensitive and specialized conditions.?

While his parents wait for medical help, meanwhile, Michael continues to live in a world without regular food.

?He doesn?t know what real juice tastes like, or real milk,? said Jennifer Gonzalez.

Race linked to childhood food allergies, not environmental allergies

Feb. 23, 2013 ? Research conducted at Henry Ford Hospital shows that race and possibly genetics play a role in children's sensitivity to developing allergies. Researchers found:

  • African-American children were sensitized to at least one food allergen three times more often than Caucasian children.
  • African-American children with one allergic parent were sensitized to an environmental allergen twice as often as African-American children without an allergic parent.

The study will be presented February 23 at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology annual meeting,

"Our findings suggest that African Americans may have a gene making them more susceptible to food allergen sensitization or the sensitization is just more prevalent in African American children than white children at age 2," says Haejim Kim, M.D., a Henry Ford allergist and the study's lead author. "More research is needed to further look at the development of allergy."

Sensitization means a person's immune system produces a specific antibody to an allergen. It does not mean the person will experience allergy symptoms.

According to an AAAI study from 2009-2010, an estimated 8 percent of children have a food allergy, and 30 percent of children have multiple food allergies. Peanut is the most prevalent allergen, followed by milk and shellfish. 1The Henry Ford study consisted of a longitudinal birth cohort of 543 children who were interviewed with their parents and examined at a clinical visit at age 2. Data included parental self-report of allergies and self-reported race (African American or white/non-Hispanic). The children were skin-tested for three food allergens -- egg whites, peanuts and milk -- and seven environmental allergens.

Key findings:

  • 20.1 percent of African-American children were sensitized to an food allergen compared to 6.4 percent in Caucasian children.
  • 13.9 percent of African-American children were sensitized to an environmental allergen compared to 11 percent of Caucasian children.
  • African-American children with an allergic parent were sensitized to an environmental allergen 2.45 times more often than African-American children without an allergic parent.

Mexico's Economy Grew 3.9% in 2012

The country had posted similar growth in 2011 and the government had forecast a rise of 3.5% for 2012.

Mexico City -- Beating government forecasts in Latin America's second biggest economy, the Mexican economy grew 3.9% last year, official figures showed Monday.

The country had posted similar growth in 2011 and the government had forecast a rise of 3.5% for 2012.

Agricultural activity gave a boost to the economy with 6.7% annual growth due to higher production in foods such as beans, corn and wheat, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography.

The economy grew by 3.2% in the last quarter of 2012 compared to the same period the previous year.

Mexico had sunk into deep recession in 2009 as the world financial crisis caused its economy to contract by six percent.

But the country, second to Brazil economically in the region, bounced back in 2010 with 5.3% growth.

PFT: Goodell reportedly made nearly $30M in '11

Titus YoungAP

Titus Young, the 2011 second-round draft pick who lasted less than two years with the Lions, has now lasted less than two weeks with the Rams.

Rams coach Jeff Fisher confirmed today that the Rams have waived Young, ten days after they picked him up off waivers from Detroit. Fisher declined to get into specifics, but he said that after spending a few days with Young at the team facilities, the Rams? coaching staff decided he wasn?t a good fit.

?We felt Titus is better suited for another organization,? Fisher said.

Reading between the lines in Fisher?s comments, it sounds like the same attitude problems that plagued Young?s career in Detroit cropped up again during his brief stay in St. Louis.

?We felt like by claiming Titus we would have the opportunity to spend a good deal of time with him,? Fisher said. ?We spent that time with him, we spent probably four or five days with him, and as an organization, at the end of the interview process, you might call it, we felt it was best to go in another direction.?

Fisher described Young as ?an outstanding young talent? and made clear that there were no injury or health issues, which pretty much leaves the off-field concerns as the only reason the Rams wouldn?t want him.

Although he showed flashes of talent with the Lions, Young proved to be more trouble than he was worth. Penalties and talk that he wasn?t working enough in practice plagued his rookie season, and in his second year with the team he stepped up his trouble-making by sucker-punching teammate Louis Delmas in practice, and by purposely lining up in the wrong spot on the field to protest his belief that the Lions were throwing too many passes to Calvin Johnson and not enough to Young.

The Rams were the only team to put in a waiver claim for Young, and now the Rams have decided they don?t want him, either. At this point, the odds seem good that the 23-year-old Young has played his last NFL game.

Fox hires Scott Brown as contributor

(AP) ? Fox News Channel is hiring former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown as a contributor, and the Republican is making his debut in prime time on Wednesday.

The network says Brown will offer commentary across several programs, starting with Sean Hannity on Wednesday. Brown lost his seat to Elizabeth Warren in November and declined to run in a special election to fill the Senate seat vacated by now-Secretary of State John Kerry.

Brown says he's looking forward to challenging elected officials to put the country's needs ahead of their partisan interests.

Fox has been remaking its contributor lineup in recent months, cutting ties to Sarah Palin and Dick Morris while hiring Brown and Dennis Kucinich.

Horsemeat scandal sheds light on food-supply chain

LONDON (AP) ? First, there was "pink slime." Then horsemeat. Most recently? "Desinewed meat."

Recent revelations that such products have reached dinner tables, including horsemeat falsely labeled as beef in Europe, have cast an unappetizing light on the global food industry.

Critics say the widening horsemeat scandal in particular is a result of a food supply chain that has become too complex to be safe. Others say we are stuck with the system: In today's world, foodstuffs are highly mobile commodities, while consumers have come to expect ? and increasingly need ? plentiful, cheap meat.

Genevieve Cazes-Valette, a French anthropologist who studies food, said that throughout history, people around the world have had a special and intense relationship with meat.

"When we fast, we don't give up bread. We give up meat," she said.

A century ago, meat was a dish primarily for special occasions or the rich. That's still the case in much of the world, but today consumers in wealthy countries expect meat to be their primary source of protein, and they want it inexpensive and convenient. They'd also prefer not to think too hard about where it came from.

"They want cheap and they want good," Cazes-Valette said.

Europe's horsemeat scandal has exposed a food supply chain set up to fulfill that demand ? one in which meat from a Romanian abattoir can end up in British lasagna by way of companies in Luxembourg and France.

Since horse DNA was found in burgers from an Irish plant last month, the scandal has snaked its way across the continent, exposing a haphazard system with seemingly little rhyme or reason.

Horsemeat is not generally considered unsafe to eat, but the scandal has triggered disgust in places such as Britain where it traditionally is not eaten and anger over the mislabeling of food products.

Three of the British firms whose products were found to contain horsemeat say they got the products from a French food processing firm, Comigel.

Comigel instructed Tavola, its subsidiary in Luxembourg, to make the products. Tavola placed an order for the meat with supplier Spanghero, based in the south of France, which contacted a Cypriot trader, who subcontracted a Dutch trader.

The Dutch trader placed an order with abattoirs in Romania, which sent the meat to Spanghero. The Romanians deny mislabeling horsemeat as beef.

Spanghero sent it on to Comigel's factory in Luxembourg, and it went into food products sent to stores across Europe.

Apart from the use of horsemeat ? whose origins remain disputed ? there is nothing unusual about the process. But the thought of anything making an unannounced appearance in prepared foods disturbs consumers.

"In France as elsewhere, people have this idea that we don't know quite what we're eating. We don't know where it comes from. We don't know who has touched it," Cazes-Valette said.

That unease stems partly from the fact that people in developed countries have become detached from the origins of the food they eat.

British Conservative lawmaker Mark Spencer argued in the House of Commons this week that the horsemeat crisis arose partly because "we have lost context of how valuable food is."

"You could say the same about car tires," he said. "You would never buy second-hand cheap car tires from someone on the cheap because you would instantly recognize that your own individual safety is at risk."

It's true that in many Western countries food has rarely been so cheap, and we have never been so dependent on cheap food.

In Britain, for instance, food once was one of the major household expenses, but now U.K. households spend less on food than on transport, culture and recreation, housing or fuel.

According to the Office for National Statistics, British households spent on average just over 11 percent of their income on food in 2011, much less than a few decades ago.

But the global economic crisis has hit incomes and, simultaneously, factors including bad weather, growing demand and speculation have caused prices for staples such as wheat, corn and soybeans to rise.

In the austerity-hit countries of Europe, people are buying less food, and seeking cheaper food. So there's a rise in demand for low-cost processed foods, including cheap burgers, pasta meals and pies.

Supermarkets, under pressure to offer cheap food, demand suppliers provide products for less. That means bulking out burgers with the cheapest ingredients possible.

Some in Britain have blamed the horsemeat fraud on an abrupt European ban on the use of "desinewed meat," the minced flesh that comes from rubbing animal carcasses that have already been stripped of prime cuts. Desinewed meat played a major role in British meat products ? but since last year's ban, suppliers have had to find a replacement.

And that, some believe, is where horsemeat came into the picture.

Elizabeth Dowler, professor of food and social policy at the University of Warwick, said the root of the problem is that food has become a vast international industry whose main concern is the bottom line.

"Food is treated as a commodity," she said. "It is not seen as something that contributes to well-being.

"The reality is that the food system is largely in the private sector and it is about running businesses, very successful businesses that make a lot of money."

European fears about horsemeat echo those that swept across the United States last year when the use of a meat product dubbed "pink slime" became widely known.

Like desinewed meat or horseflesh, it was never alleged that "pink slime" was unfit for human consumption, but the thought of fatty bits of beef being treated with a puff of ammonia to kill bacteria was something of a turnoff for Americans.

The reaction to "pink slime" was drastic.

Fast food companies, including McDonald's, changed their menus. Grocery stores promised to stop selling it. All but three states opted against buying meat with the product for school meals. And the meat processors that churned out the product began closing plants and laying off employees.

Cazes-Valette predicted a similar reaction in Europe.

"People will go back to buying pure beef, that they're going to prepare themselves," she said. "Maybe they're even going to go back to the butcher, where they know what's going on."

And, she added, rather than pay more "they're going to eat less."

But Michael Walker, a science and food law consultant to British food-testing and analysis company LGC, said it will be hard for people to break their dependence on a complex food supply chain, especially if they want year-round availability of a wide range of products.

Walker said the horsemeat scandal shows the system of testing and regulation is fallible, but not fundamentally broken.

He said the science of DNA testing that exposes adulterated meat is robust, but that regulators, many of whom are facing government budget cuts, needed to use more "intelligence-led sampling" to catch offenders.

"The ingenuity of fraudsters is almost infinite, but we must do our best to try and keep up," he said.

How the Heck Do I Use GitHub?

How the Heck Do I Use GitHub?Dear Lifehacker,
I've learned to code and want to start using GitHub to manage my projects. Despite the introductory lesson they provide, I still don't understand how it works at all. Can you help me?

Sincerely,
Git Help

Dear GH,
GitHub's a great tool but it's definitely a little confusing the first time around (and, possibly, a few times after that). That's likely why GitHub created software (for OS X and Windows) to make the process a bit easier. Nevertheless, it's good to learn the old-fashioned way otherwise your options in the simplified software won't make sense. Let's start by walking through the basics.

Step One: Sign Up for GitHub

How the Heck Do I Use GitHub?Here comes the easy part: make yourself a GitHub account signing up on the front page. After completing the form, GitHub will sign you in and take you to your empty news feed. In the middle of the page, you'll see the boot camp (pictured to the right). We're going to go through it to set up your account and, later, create your first repository. Click on "Set Up Git" to get started.

Step Two: Install Git

How the Heck Do I Use GitHub?GitHub exists because of a version control application called git. The site is based around how git works, and git is pretty old. It runs via the command line and has no fancy graphical user interface. Since it's made to manage code you wrote, this shouldn't sound too scary. (Of course, as previously mentioned, GitHub did make wonderful software to allow you to use their service without the command line but that won't help you too much unless you know the basics.)

Git works by reading a local code repository (just a folder containing code for your project) on your computer and the mirroring that code elsewhere (in this case, GitHub's servers). Initially we'll commit (i.e. send) your entire local repository to GitHub, but that's just a one-time affair. As you continue to work on your code, you'll simply commit changes. GitHub will then keep track of the changes you made, creating different versions of files so you can revert back to old ones if you want (or just keep track of those changes for other reasons). This is primarily why you'd want to use a version control system like git on your own, but additional benefits surface when using git to manage code with other people working on your project. When multiple developers commit code with git, GitHub becomes a central repository where all the code that everyone's working on can stay in sync. You'll commit your changes, and other developers will pull them (i.e. sync them to their local repository). You'll do the same with their code.

Git makes this all happen, so you need to download the latest version and install it. On OS X, you'll just install the command line app. On Windows, you'll get a few more items. We'll discuss how they work in the next step.

Step Three: Set Up Git

How the Heck Do I Use GitHub?To set up git, you need to make your way into the command line. On OS X, that means launching the Terminal app (Hard Drive -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal) and on Windows that means launching the Git Bash app you just installed?not the Windows command prompt. When you're ready, tell git your name like this:

git config --global user.name "Your Name Here"

For example, mine would look like this because I'm using a test account for this example:

git config --global user.name "Adam Dachis"

You can put in any name you like, but afterwards you'll need to input your email and that email must be the email you used when signing up for GitHub:

git config --global user.email "your_email@youremail.com"

If, for whatever reason, you signed up for GitHub with the wrong email address, you'll need to change it.

Now, to avoid always entering your login credentials and generating SSH keys, you'll want to install the credential helper so your passwords are cached. If you're on Windows, download it and install it. If you're on OS X, you'll need to handle this through the Terminal. To start, use this command to download the credential helper:

curl -s -O \
http://github-media-downloads.s3.amazonaws.com/osx/git-credential-osxkeychain

This will download a tiny little file and shouldn't take too long. When finished, enter the following command to make sure the permissions are correct on the file you just download (and fix them if not):

chmod u+x git-credential-osxkeychain

Now it's time to install the credential helper into the same folder where you install git. To do so, enter this command:

sudo mv git-credential-osxkeychain `dirname \`which git\``

You'll be prompted for your administrator password because the above command began with sudo. Sudo is shorthand for "super user do" and is necessary when performing a task that requires root access. The sudo command allows you to become the root user (a user with permission to do pretty much anything) on your operating system for a moment so you can perform this task. You're asked to enter your password to prove you're an administrator on the computer and should be allowed to do this. Once you've entered your password and the credential helper has been moved, finish up the installation with this command:

git config --global credential.helper osxkeychain

Now you're all set and can move on to actually using git and GitHub!

Step Four: Create Your First Repository

How the Heck Do I Use GitHub?Now that you've made it this far, you can actually use GitHub! As a first order of business, we're going to create a repository (or "repo" for short). Head on over to GitHub and click the "New Repository" button on the top right of your account page. (Note: If you're still displaying the GitHub bootcamp section, it'll show up underneath it.)

When creating a repository you have a few things to decide including it's name and whether it'll be publicly accessible or not. Choosing a name should be pretty simple because you likely already have a name for your project. If you're just following along for learning purposes, use "Hello-World." Why "Hello-World" and not "Hello World"? Because spaces and special characters will cause problems. Keep it simple and easy to type in the command line. If you want to include a more complex name, you can add it to the optional description field beneath the name field.

If you're creating an open-source project, you want a public repository. If you want to code by yourself or share only with specific people, a private repository will do. Make the choice that works best for you and your project.

When you're all done, you can click the "Create repository" button but you might want to do one other thing first: check the "Initialize this repository with a README" checkbox. Why? All repositories require a README file. Ideally that file would contain a little information about your project, but you might not want to deal with that right now. By initializing the repository with a README, you'll get an empty README file that you can just deal with later. For the purposes of this tutorial, we're going to leave the box unchecked because, in the next section, we're going to create a README file from scratch to practice committing (sending) it to GitHub.

Step Five: Make Your First Commit

How the Heck Do I Use GitHub?When you send files to GitHub, you commit them. To practice, we're going to initialize your local repository and create a README file to commit as practice. Before you start, you need to know where your local code repository is on your computer and how to access it via the command line. In this tutorial, we're going to assume there's a directory called "Hello-World" in your computer's home folder. If you need to create one, just run this command (same for Git Bash on Windows and OS X's terminal):

mkdir ~/Hello-World

Now change to that directory using the cd (change directory) command:

cd ~/Hello-World

In case you were wondering, the ~ represents your home directory in Git Bash and Terminal. It's simply shorthand so you don't have to type it all out (which would look more like /Users/yourusername/). Now that your repository is ready, type this:

git init

If you already had a repository ready to go, you'd just need to cd to that directory and then run the git init command in there instead. Either way, your local repository is ready to go and you can start committing code. But wait, you don't have anything to commit! Run this command to create a README file:

touch README

Let's take a break for a second and see what just happened. Go into the home folder on your computer and look at the Hello-World folder (or look at whatever folder you're using for a local repository). You'll notice a README file inside, thanks to the command you just ran. What you won't see is a .git folder, but that's because it's invisible. Git hides it in there, but because you ran the git init command you know it exists. If you're skeptical, just run the ls command in Git Bash/Terminal to display a list of everything in the current directory (which, if you're following along, is your local repository).

So how does git know we want to commit this README file we just created? It doesn't, and you have to tell it. This command will do the trick:

git add README

If you want to add other files to commit, you'll use the same command but replace README with the name of a different file. Now, run this command to commit it:

git commit -m 'first commit'

While the other commands were pretty straightforward, the commit command has a little more going on so let's break it down. When you type git, that's just telling the command line that you want to use the git program. When you type command, you're telling git you want to use the commit command. Everything that follows those two thing count as options. The first, -m, is what's known as a flag. A flag specifies that you want to do something special rather than just run the commit command. In this case, the -m flag means "message" and what follows it is your commit message (in the example, 'first commit'). The message isn't absolutely necessary (although you'll usually need to provide one), but simply a reference to help you differentiate the various versions of a file (or files) you commit to your repository.

Your first commit should go by in a split second because you haven't actually uploaded anything yet. To get this empty README file to GitHub, you need to push it with a couple of commands. Here's the first:

git remote add origin https://github.com/yourusername/Hello-World.git

You need to replace "yourusername" with?you guessed it?your GitHub username. For me, it'd look like this:

git remote add origin https://github.com/gittest1040/Hello-World.git

This command tells git where to send your Hello-World repository. Now all you need to do is send it:

git push origin master

Once you run that command, everything (in this case, just your README file) will make it's way over to GitHub. Congratulations on your first commit!

Learning More

Using GitHub requires more than just committing a README file, but these basics should give you a good grasp on how to interact with the git app and the service. Now that you know how GitHub works at its core, you can use the GitHub apps to manage your code instead if you prefer. If you want to learn more about GitHub, there are some great tutorials. For starters, take a look at how to fork a repository and LockerGnome's GitHub guide.

Have fun managing your code!

Love,
Lifehacker

How one iPhone 5 user reacted to the Galaxy Note 2

It?s always interesting to hear about folks? experiences when migrating from one platform to another. It?s a tough transition to make when considering the vast differences in the ecosystems, the way the devices work, and having to start anew on a platform that is far from anything you?ve used.

I personally tried to halfway migrate to iOS by getting an iPad, justifying the move with the lack of native tablet apps for Android. It was a fine device, but I?d only lasted about 5 months before crawling back to Android ? no amount of apps in the world could replace the powerful multitasking and customization features Android has to offer, and that?s before even thinking about custom ROMs.

That?s why I was fascinated by this article over at sister site iSource.com. Brad ? an iPhone 5 user ? was enticed by the unique features and powerful hardware of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, and decided to give it a real spin. It?s an interesting switch as the devices are polar opposites: one prides itself on being bigger, while the other prides itself on being smaller. Android with TouchWiz, despite what Apple might have you think, is a much different experience than iOS 5.

I could go on and on, but you already know the deal. He talks about his two-week experience with the device, giving us his impressions on whether or not the bigger display is all it?s cracked up to be, Samsung?s unique multi-tasking features with multi-view and S Pen, and more.

I won?t spoil it for you so you?ll just have to get on over to iSource to read it for yourself. After doing that, why not swing back here and let us know about a time you tried to jump from one platform to another. We?ve all thought about it before, and continue to do so as new platforms are introduced and old ones evolve. Don?t be ashamed!

Wall Street closes flat as market takes a breather

Stocks ended a quiet session with slight moves on Monday as investors found few reasons to keep pushing shares higher following a six-week advance, though the longer-term trend was still viewed as positive.

The benchmark index is up more 6.4 percent in 2013, putting both the S&P 500 and Dow industrials near multi-year highs. The S&P is less than 4 percent from its all-time intraday high of 1,576.09, hit in October 2007.

"This is still a market that looks terrific, but when you're up for six weeks in a row, everyone is going to want to take a pause going into the seventh week even if there is no bad news out there," said Eric Kuby, chief investment officer at North Star Investment Management in Chicago.

Volume was light, with about 4.812 billion shares changing hands on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and NYSE MKT, well below the daily average so far this year of about 6.48 billion shares.

Wall Street was modestly lower throughout the session but regained some ground in the final hour of trading as Google Inc rebounded off earlier losses. Shares of the Internet search giant dipped 0.4 percent to $782.42, recovering from earlier declines of 1 percent after the company said in a filing former chief executive Eric Schmidt is selling roughly 42 percent of his stake in the company.

Also in the tech space, Apple Inc rose up 1 percent to $479.93 after the New York Times reported the iPhone maker was experimenting with the design of a device similar to a wristwatch.

The Federal Reserve's Vice Chair Janet Yellen, seen as a potential successor to Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke next year, said the Fed is still aggressively stimulating an anemic U.S. economic recovery that has failed to bring rapid progress on employment.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 21.81 points, or 0.16 percent, at 13,971.16. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 0.92 points, or 0.06 percent, at 1,517.01. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 1.87 points, or 0.06 percent, at 3,192.00.

Upbeat U.S. and Chinese data last week helped the S&P 500 extend its weekly winning streak to six. The index gained about 8 percent over that period.

Equities have been strong performers lately and many investors have used any declines in the market as opportunities to buy.

"Everyone wants to buy on a dip in this market, but if you're on the sidelines right now, the decline we're seeing today just isn't the kind you would jump in on," Kuby said.

President Barack Obama will describe his plan for spurring the economy in his State of the Union address on Tuesday. He is expected to offer proposals for investment in infrastructure, manufacturing, clean energy and education.

Opposition has grown to the $24.4 billion buyout of Dell Inc , the No. 3 personal computer maker, as three of the largest investors joined Southeastern Asset Management on Friday in raising objections. Dell said in a regulatory filing it had considered many strategic options before opting to go private in a buyout led by Chief Executive Michael Dell.
