FDA: Mold, bacteria at pharmacy tied to outbreak

(AP) ? Federal health inspectors say they found bacteria and mold growing in rooms that were supposed to be kept sterile at the pharmacy linked to a deadly outbreak of meningitis.

The Food and Drug Administration has released its initial report after investigating the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Mass., earlier this month.

Inspectors say they found green, yellow and red growths, water droplets and other potential contaminants in a room used to mix and seal specially formulated medicines.

Steroid injections made by the New England Compounding Center have been tied to an outbreak of fungal meningitis that has sickened 328 people across the U.S., causing 24 deaths. Last week FDA officials confirmed the black fungus found in company vials is the same as that which has sickened patients.

Black widow's tango mortale in gamma-ray light: Scientists discover record-breaking millisecond pulsar with new analysis method

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Pulsars are the compact remnants from explosions of massive stars. Some of them spin around their own axis hundreds of times per second, emitting beams of radiation into space. Until now, they could only be found through their pulsed radio emissions. Now, scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute/AEI) in Hanover assisted by the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy have discovered a millisecond pulsar solely via its pulsed gamma radiation. A new data analysis method developed by the AEI was crucial for the success. The pulsar is accompanied by an unusual sub-stellar partner, which it is vaporizing, hence the name "black widow."

Back in 1994, astronomers discovered a source of strong gamma-rays in the constellation of Centaurus. They suspected that a pulsar was the origin of the energetic radiation. Now, a team of scientists led by Holger Pletsch from the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute, AEI) has solved the mystery and identified the culprit: the millisecond gamma-ray pulsar PSR J1311-3430. The development of a new data analysis method by the AEI scientists enabled the discovery, since rapidly spinning pulsars are extremely difficult to find.

To unambiguously identify a gamma-ray pulsar, astronomers must know its properties to very high precision. This includes its position, spin frequency, and how the latter changes over time. If the pulsar is in a binary system, the analysis problem is even more complicated: at least three additional orbital parameters have to be determined as well.

In the case of PSR J1311-3430 astronomers had already observed the companion, which is heated by the radiation from the pulsar, with optical telescopes. They were thus able to partially constrain the orbital parameters and confine the position of the pulsar.

"We developed a particularly efficient method to search the data from NASA's Fermi satellite for gamma-ray millisecond pulsars, including those in binary systems. Only this method enabled us to probe the wide parameter ranges," says Holger Pletsch, lead author of the article published in Science. The new analysis method enables scientists to conduct a 'blind search' for gamma-ray millisecond pulsars for the first time -- right up to very high spinning frequencies.

The scientists analysed the Fermi data on the Atlas computer cluster at the AEI. "Our search used data collected by the gamma-ray satellite over a total of four years. Very soon after we started running the analysis, a clear signal showed up in the results. What we saw was very exciting," says Pletsch.

PSR J1311-3430 spins 390 times per second, emitting gamma-ray photons into space in the form of a beam, similar to a lighthouse. In roughly one in a million revolutions of the pulsar, a single photon reaches the detector on board Fermi.

The gamma-ray signal also reveals much about the companion to the astronomers: the orbital motion of the binary system modulates the photon arrival times, yielding information about the partner star. "The companion object is small and unusually dense," says AEI Director Bruce Allen. "It is at least eight times as massive as the planet Jupiter, but has at most 60 percent the planet's radius."

From this information, the researchers calculated the density of the companion, which turned out to be unusually high; it is around 30 times as dense as the Sun. Presumably, the small companion is the compact remnant of a star which has been orbiting the pulsar since earlier times. Over time, the pulsar accreted matter from the star, thereby accelerating its rotation. Pulsar and companion moved closer and closer together.

"At present, the remaining stellar core, which presumably consists mainly of helium, is heated by the radiation from the pulsar and literally evaporated," says Holger Pletsch. Astronomers call this type of pulsar a 'black widow', in analogy with a species of spider which kills the smaller male after mating. In the distant future, PSR J1311-4330 might possibly completely vaporize its companion and from then on travel through space alone.

And that's not all: "Our discovery is not only a first, it also sets several new records," explains Bruce Allen. Currently, the odd couple is orbiting its common centre of mass on an almost perfect circular trajectory in only 93 minutes. This is the shortest known orbital period of all pulsars in binary systems.

At a distance of only 1.4 Earth-Moon separations, the binary system is the closest one known to date with a pulsar. The pulsar is speeding along its circular orbit with at least 13,000 kilometres per hour. Its light-weight companion is even faster, at up to 2.8 million kilometres per hour.

Holger Pletsch and his colleagues also had a close look at older observations with the Green Bank radio telescope in West Virginia, but were unable to find the fast pulsar here. "Apparently, the cloud of vaporized material from the companion absorbs most of the radio wave emissions from the pulsar and possibly makes it invisible to radio telescopes," says Lucas Guillemot from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, co-author of the publication. The scientists are already planning further observations at higher radio frequencies. They hope to use them to accurately determine the object's distance from Earth, for example.

Systems like this provide astronomers with new insights into the evolution of very close binary systems, which are as yet still incompletely understood. PSR J1311-3430 could also shed new light on the generation of the gamma-ray photons and radio emissions in the strong magnetic field of pulsars. The pulsar may just be the tip of the iceberg: many other unidentified gamma-ray sources may harbour similarly unusual systems. Thirty years after the discovery of the first millisecond pulsar in the radio range, the novel analysis method of the Max Planck researchers at the AEI has opened a new door to the easier identification of these elusive celestial objects.

A Finnish Tradition: Baby Gifts for All Moms - Blogs | Babble

13439.01 300x195 A Finnish Tradition: Baby Gifts for All Moms

All Finnish mothers receive a box of these baby essentials.

I remember when I had Harlan I was so caught up on what essential baby items I needed. I knew that I wouldn?t have much time to get out of the house and I wanted to have everything that would get me and my baby through those first few weeks together. Thankfully I had family nearby that threw me a wonderful baby shower giving me all of the essentials (and more) that I needed.

With Avery I was very lucky to have many of those essentials stored away and ready for her arrival. We didn?t have to buy much at all for her and she is happily wearing many of her sister?s hand me downs that are still in great shape.

Although I know how fortunate I am, I know that there are many not as fortunate and that are doing everything they can to provide the essentials for their little one.?I recently discovered ?something amazing that the government in Finland does for all new mothers in their country. When I read about the program, I was blown away at their generosity and passion for women and children.

All expectant mothers living in Finland receive a package of baby essentials from the government. The package including clothes, bedding, and other child care items. The program started back in 1937 and was originally reserved only for low-income mothers. The grant was introduced to try to combat the low birth rate and high infant mortality of the time. In 1949 the grant became accessible to all mothers in Finland. First time mothers now have the option of receiving the maternity package or a cash benefit. According the the Kela website, nearly all mothers choose the maternity package.

As I was looking through the contents of the package, they listed the box as a special gift as well. Now most of us would think of a box as just a box. But the Finnish government has really put a lot of thought into this program because the box can also double as a ?crib when you bring your baby home. Pretty incredible, right?

It?s inspiring to see what this country is doing to promote motherhood. It would be pretty incredible if more picked up on their generosity and did the same.

What do you think of these maternity packages?

FOXBORO ? Before he plays at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, Patriots running back Shane Vereen wants to make a stop at Buckingham Palace.

"I just want to see the soldiers outside of the Palace that can't smile," a smiling Vereen said Tuesday. "I just want to take a picture."

On deck

Sunday, Patriots (4-3) vs. St. Louis Rams (3-4), at London, 1 p.m.

And then he'll play for the usually dour coach Bill Belichick in New England's second trip in four years to London where they'll face the St. Louis Rams.

"The time change, the travel ? that's certainly different than most normal games," Belichick said, "but it's not anything we haven't dealt with before. We've traveled to the West Coast. We're just going the other direction. Hopefully, we'll be able to deal with it."

The Patriots went to London in 2009, beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 35-7, but most players on that New England team won't be with this one when it travels across the Atlantic Ocean on a red-eye Thursday night.

For Vereen, in his second NFL season, it will be his first trip to Europe.

"I'm excited to go, see what it's all about and be able to play somewhere else, but at the same time we do have to go get a 'W,'" Vereen said, adding, "I think it's fun" more than the inconvenience of making a long trip in the middle of the season.

"I think it will be a good thing for us. I think it will be a good thing for St. Louis as well," he said. "Middle of the season, you kind of start getting into the lull, the every-day routine. So to break the routine a little bit and get to go out of the country, I think will be something fun."

Injured safety Steve Gregory, who missed the last two games with a hip injury, visited London with the San Diego Chargers in 2008 and is looking forward to another trip.

"It was a great experience," he said. "Obviously, I had never been there before so to see London, the overall experience, was just amazing."

As far as his off-field plans, Gregory joked that he would see Queen Elizabeth, "if she'll let me." Running back Stevan Ridley, asked about visiting the queen, said, "Hey man, if she calls, yeah."

Placekicker Stephen Gostkowski, who made the 2009 trip, said, "It was a lot of fun and we got a win and hopefully it will be the same experience. It's a long trip but it's not too much farther than like when we went to Seattle (Oct. 14). So, it will be a good experience if we play well and can come home with a win."

As far as what he might like to do this time, Gostkowski said, "I doubt we'll really have time to really enjoy . go sightseeing, maybe take a tour bus, I don't know. They haven't told us the schedule yet. It will be fun if we win and we'll have a good time."

The Wembley Stadium field hasn't gotten great reviews.

"Every field is different, you get used to it," Belichick said. "It's a grass field. It's not the fastest field but we've played on plenty comparable to that. It's a little different environment out there. They do the soccer cheers and the rugby cheers and all that.

"It's a little less football-oriented."

NOTES: Gostkowski, who kicked the tying and winning field goals last Sunday in a 29-26 overtime win over the New York Jets, said, "I got a chance to help the team and I came through. It was fun. It was a good feeling to come out with a win, a division win against a team that we like to beat."... The Patriots have gained more than 350 yards in each of their last 16 games, tying an NFL record set by the Rams (1999-2000), this week's opponent. "I'm a lot more concerned about wins than yards. I don't really care about the stats," Belichick said. "I just care about scoring more points than the other team."

AhnLab Introduces the V3 Click, the First-to-Market Personal ...

Viruses, trojans and spyware. These are the perennial pests of modern computing and the bane of system administrators and IT personnel everywhere, not to mention the end users themselves! When I first heard about USB flash drives being used to infect PCs a few years back, I wondered: if a USB device can infect a system, can a USB device protect a system? Apparently some engineers at AhnLab wondered the same thing too, because AhnLab has released the industry?s first Personal Security Device for PCs, the V3 Click Home Desktop Edition unit than runs from a PC?s USB port.

This interesting tool helps circumvent the problems associated with traditional antivirus and security software that can often put a strain on system resources and be tricky to use properly. Its design reminiscent of the Staples commercials?? big ?Easy? button, the V3 Click can help make protecting your PC easy too. Simply plug the device into a free USB port, run the simple setup program and your system is protected.

Simple but Powerful Antivirus

V3 Click has all the must-have features you need in an antivirus.

  • * Clean Wise: Quickly scans the most vulnerable areas in your computer, and to enhance system performances.
  • * Stay Awake: Monitors your computer sat all times, and detects security threats running.
  • * PC Clinic Chart: Shows you the operation history of V3 Click and the current status of your computer.

PC Optimization

V3 Click offers a both quick and thorough type of PC optimization. By effectively moving junk out of your registry, temp files and memory it will not only stabilize but enhance the system performance of your computer.
Don?t worry; PC optimization doesn?t need to be performed separately like your ordinary antivirus. Simply run Clean Wise or Clean Wide and your PC optimization will follow automatically.
2-Port Secure USB Hub?

Threats against the computer come from a lot of places but besides the internet, unsecured storage devices are one of the frequent sources of threats. V3 Click offers a new concept of USB hubs, a 2-Port Secure Hub. Not only will it act as a typical 2-Port USB hub, it will also immediately scan the USB device for threats, when inserted into the hub, and will delete/repair if a threat is found.
V3 Click will protect the computer from all USB devices before any unsecured data is transferred.

?

The V3 Click uses visual clues to show what it is doing relative to your system?s health, helping cut down on confusion, using Green, Blue and Red as color indicators. Yellow tends to imply an ?uh-oh? situation, so AhnLabs wisely omitted that stop light configuration.

In addition to keeping malware at bay, the V3 Click also has system tune-up capabilities to help improve system performance.

The V3 Click also features two protected USB ports of its own, along with 2.7GB of internal storage, so not only can it protect your system and tune it up, but offer an additional port and personal storage as well, a nifty set of features for a consumer security appliance.

Cruise files $50M suit against magazine publisher

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? An attorney for Tom Cruise said he filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit Wednesday against the publishers of Life & Style magazine for articles that said the actor has abandoned his 6-year-old daughter, Suri.

Cruise's attorney, Bert Fields said to falsely claim the actor deserted his daughter is a "vicious lie."

"Tom is a caring father who dearly loves Suri. She's a vital part of his life and always will be," Fields said. "To say it in lurid headlines with a tearful picture of Suri is reprehensible."

The lawsuit was filed in a Los Angeles federal court.

An email message left for a spokeswoman for Bauer Publishing, which produces Life & Style, was not immediately returned.

Cruise and Suri's mother, Katie Holmes, were divorced earlier this year. They had been married for six years. The breakup has been tabloid fodder, and Suri often appears in entertainment magazines.

Cruise doesn't like to file lawsuits but felt it was appropriate because "sleaze peddlers" are trying to make money about the actor's relationship with his daughter, Fields said.

"These serial defamers are foreign-owned companies with their global headquarters in Hamburg," Fields said. "They take money from unsuspecting Americans by selling their malicious garbage. Having to pay a libel judgment may slow them down."

If Cruise prevails, Fields said his client would give the money to charity.

2012 CLT20: Jacques Kallis blames weather gods for KKR?s early exit ? Cricket News Update

Kolkata Knight Riders? South African import, veteran all-rounder Jacques Kallis on Monday lamented the washed out game against Perth Scorchers in Durban, following the IPL side?s group stage ouster from the ongoing Champions League T20 tournament.

The Gautam Gambhir led reigning IPL champions thrashed in-form local outfit, Nashua Titans, by a whopping 99-run margin in their fourth and final CLT20 Group A fixture, here at Newlands in Cape Town, on Sunday.

While speaking to media reporters after his side managed to sign off on a triumphant note, senior all-rounder Jacques Kallis said that the Knight Riders could have made the tournament semi-finals had there not been a washout at Kingsmead last Wednesday.

?It's a pity we didn't start of the tournament like this,? Kallis said after the comprehensive win over the local favourites, Titans.

?I felt that we started playing some good cricket in Durban (against the Perth Scorchers) but unfortunately the weather stopped us from getting through to the next round. That was disappointing," the prolific all-rounder added further.

The Kolkata Knight Riders? Champions League T20 campaign got off to a tumultuous start with the IPL outfit losing both its opening matches ? to Delhi Daredevils by 52 runs and Auckland Aces by seven wickets. The rain-ruined fixture against the Australian side, Perth Scorchers, knocked Gambhir and men out of the tournament.

With one foot already out of the tournament, the reigning IPL champs played aggressive cricket against Titans last night, outclassing the tournament favourites in every department. An impressive show from KKR?s top order helped them set an intimidating 188 for 5 on the board, before Lakshmipathy Balaji led attack bundled the opposition batting line-up for just 89 in 16.4 overs.

Happy with his side?s performance against the Titans, Kallis said that this was a nice way to bid adieu to the esteemed Twenty20 league, featuring domestic champions from around the world.

?This was almost a perfect game for us,? said Kallis, a veteran of 143 Twenty20 games. ?We came out and batted really well and paced the innings nicely. There were some fantastic individual knocks and then we bowled with the intensity we needed to bowl with.?This was a nice way to end this campaign," the veteran Proteas all-rounder concluded.

Spain's Rajoy gets mixed message in regional votes

MADRID, Spain (Reuters) - Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy secured backing for his austerity drive in a vote in his home region of Galicia on Sunday, but a clear win for nationalist parties in the Basque Country could soon prove a headache for the central government.

According to exit polls, Spain's ruling centre-right People's Party was set to retain its absolute majority and government in Galicia with 39 to 42 seats in the regional parliament compared with 18 to 20 seats for the Socialist Party and 15 to 18 seats for two nationalist parties.

Opinion polls before the vote had indicated the PP would win 39 or fewer seats.

In the Basque Country, the nationalist PNV (Partido Nacionalista Vasco) was set to win with 24 to 27 seats, compared with 23 to 26 seats for Bildu, a pro-independence party, 13 to 15 seats for the Socialist Party and 9 to 11 seats for the PP.

The vote in Galicia, where austerity steps were taken by the People's Party even before Rajoy took national office one year ago, had been seen as a referendum on the Spanish government's handling of the euro zone crisis. The PP has ruled in the region for 24 of the past 31 years.

European officials and analysts said Rajoy wanted to wait until after the election before requesting more European aid because he feared lenders' conditions, such as a reform of the pension system, could anger voters.

The Spanish prime minister, who received a euro zone pledge in June of up to 100 billion euros to recapitalize banks, said on Friday he still had not decided whether to request a sovereign bailout. Senior euro zone officials told Reuters they expected an aid request to be made next month.

The Galician result will give the prime minister some political breathing space after polls showing him losing support amid massive demonstrations against spending cuts in public services and successive tax hikes.

The Socialists had hoped for a repeat of regional elections in Andalusia earlier this year where it lost to the PP but managed to form a coalition government with another left-wing party.

But Sunday's results may re-open a leadership war in the Socialist Party, which ruled in Spain from 2004 to 2011.

FRESH CHALLENGE

In the Basque Country, the outcome of the vote, as expected, was influenced by central government attempts to reduce provincial power.

Spain has fallen into its second recession since 2009 and the International Monetary Fund forecasts the economy will contract by 1.3 percent next year. Unemployment is 24.6 percent.

But in the Basque Country and in Catalonia, where nationalist parties are also set to win regional elections on November 25, issues such as fiscal and territorial autonomy dominate the agenda.

It is not yet clear who the Basque nationalist PNV will have to rely on to form a government. Political analysts said it may prefer to team up with the Socialist Party rather than with Bildu, which many see as linked to Basque separatist group ETA.

Opposition parties have accused the government of using the crisis to claw back powers from Spain's 17 autonomous regions, whose overspending was partly to blame for the failure of the country to meet its deficit targets last year.

The central government has offered funding to the regions in exchange for more control over local finances. So far, seven regions, including Catalonia, have said they would tap the liquidity line. The Basque Country is not expected to do so.

NBC/WSJ poll: 2012 Presidential contest now tied

NBC's David Gregory makes sense of new polls showing conflicting leads in the 2012 presidential race.

By NBC's Mark Murray, Senior Political Editor

?

Heading into Monday's final debate and with just over two weeks until Election Day, President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney are now tied nationally, according the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

Obama and Romney both get 47 percent among likely voters in the latest edition of the poll, conducted entirely in the aftermath of the second presidential debate last Monday. In the last national NBC/WSJ poll, which was conducted before debate season began, the president held a narrow, three-point lead over his GOP challenger, 49 percent to 46 percent.

But among the wider pool of all registered voters in this new survey, Obama is ahead of Romney by five points, 49 percent to 44 percent.

Looking at some of the most important demographic groups, Romney leads among men (53 percent to 43 percent), Obama is up with women (51 percent to 43 percent) and they are essentially tied among voters in the Midwest.

The full poll ? which was conducted Oct. 17-20 among 1,000 registered voters and 816 likely voters ? will be released at 6:30 pm ET tonight.

The margin of error is plus-minus 3.1 percentage points for the sample of registered voters and plus-minus 3.43 percentage points for the sample of likely voters.?

Military zeppelin could land cargo without a runway

1 day

In the future, U.S. soldiers abroad may see their supplies come in carried under the bellies of zeppelins. Aeros Corp., a California-based startup, is working on a high-tech prototype airship on the behalf of the U.S. Department of Defense. When completed, Aeros' Pelican zeppelin will test a novel combination of airship and airplane technologies for carrying cargo long distances, the industry news site Aviation Week reported.

In the Pelican's first test flights, scheduled for early 2013, developers just want to see that they can fly and control the aircraft, Aeros CEO Igor Pasternak told Aviation Week. In the future, Aeros hopes to build a larger version of the Pelican to carry tens of tons of cargo, like current military cargo planes do. Unlike planes, however, the Pelican should be able to take off and land vertically, so it won't need long runways at its landing sites. It should also be able to sit on the ground while it's being loaded, so it won't require tethers like other airships, and it will be able to land in poor weather.?

"This will land in Africa, Afghanistan, a Walmart parking lot ? wherever," Pasternak told the Los Angeles Times.

Cargo isn't the only reason the military is interested in airships, and the military isn't the only market for a modern generation of airships, the Los Angeles Times reported. The Pentagon now uses drones to patrol enemy areas, but airships can be more effective and less expensive patrollers. An unmanned airship is able to hover over one spot for days, while drones can only go on hours-long flights. The U.S. already has more than 100 camera-equipped balloons over Afghanistan, the Los Angeles Times reported. The balloons, called aerostats, are too large to be shot down.

Meanwhile, Lockheed Martin Corp. is developing airships to carry commercial cargo.

Not all of the military's bets on airships have worked out, the Los Angeles Times reported. ?The army has lost lighter-than-air craft during high winds, including an $8.2 million airship that drifted away and exploded during a tropical storm in Puerto Rico. The Air Force also scrapped a $211 million project called the Blue Devil because of development problems.

When the ?gold standard? of evidence doesn't support your agenda ...

?you smile and just ignore it:

Los Angeles, CA ? The Action for Health Diabetes (Look AHEAD) study, a trial comparing an intensive lifestyle-intervention program aimed at achieving and maintaining weight loss and fitness in patients with type 2 diabetes, has been stopped for futility.

A large cardiovascular-outcomes study funded by the National Institutes of Health that included 5145 adults with diabetes and a body mass index >25 kg/m2, Look AHEAD failed to show a difference in the rate of nonfatal MI, nonfatal stroke, death, or hospitalization for angina among patients randomized to an intensive lifestyle intervention and those randomized to a control arm consisting of education alone.

Despite significant reductions in weight and improvements in physical-fitness levels among patients with diabetes, investigators concluded that the intervention arm, which included individual sessions with a nutritionist and/or personal trainer, as well as group sessions and refresher courses, failed to provide any benefit in terms of cardiovascular outcomes.

Dr Anne Peters (University of Southern California, Los Angeles), one of the study investigators, said in an interview that the trial was successful on one level?namely, that patients lost weight and improved their fitness. Data published at four years showed that the intensive intervention led to weight loss of up to 10% in the first year and that patients maintained a 6.5% reduction in body weight in the following three years. Over an 11-year follow-up period, the patients reported a 5% reduction in body weight from baseline, said Peters.

In addition, early data showed that treadmill fitness levels, hemoglobin A1c levels, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, HDL-cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels were all significantly improved among patients in the lifestyle-intervention arm when compared with the control group. The only cardiovascular risk factor that remained unchanged with treatment was LDL-cholesterol levels.

As lessons to be drawn are:

Despite the lack of cardiovascular benefit observed in Look AHEAD, Peters stressed that diabetic patients should not stop exercising or begin eating anything they wish.

?We do know that weight loss and exercise can prevent diabetes,? said Peters. ?I am a big advocate of prevention, both early prevention of obesity altogether, as well as prevention of diabetes in individuals who have become overweight. Lifestyle changes can help prevent diabetes. Once you have diabetes, I think weight loss and exercise can have benefits, but they are not going to reduce the risk for the primary outcome that we set for Look AHEAD, which was a risk for macrovascular events or death.?

Yes, Dr. Peters, you know exactly what millions of people you have never met should do for the rest of their lives to stay healthy.? In fact, why bother conducting clinical trials?? And we shall continue to listen, comply, and never question the advice of public health authorities!

Meanwhile one wonders what will happen to those private enterprises that are invested heavily in providing to the consumer the ever elusive lifestyle recommendation.? What in the world will they be telling patients?? Of course, it probably doesn?t matter: we don?t expect the IPAB to have any issue with this futility?
