Accelerating neutral atoms on a table top

Jan. 27, 2013 ? Charged particle accelerators have become crucially important to modern day life, be it in health care for cancer treatment or for answering important fundamental scientific questions like the existence of the HIGGS boson, the so called 'God particle'.

In a simple picture, charged particles like electrons and protons are accelerated between two end plates across which an electrical voltage is applied. High energies need high voltages (millions and billions of volts) and long acceleration paths in giant sized machines -- for instance the trillion volt machine called the 'large hadron collider' (LHC) which discovered the Higgs boson, circles over 27 km underground in Geneva! A new concept for a compact accelerator was discovered in the last decade using high powered, short pulses of laser light.

Alternating large electric fields of the light can be transformed in plasmas to create quasi static fields that can produce hundreds of millions volt accelerating voltages just over millimeter lengths on a table top!

How do we accelerate neutral particles -- i.e. particles that cannot be energized by electrical voltages? And do it over millimeters rather than hundreds of meters and moreover using lasers? Research at Ultra Short Pulse High Intensity Lab in TIFR has now found a novel scheme that can do precisely this. The concept uses the ability of powerful lasers to strip nearly 8 electrons per atom in a nano sized, cooled aggregate of argon atoms- a nano piece of ice. A 40,000 atom cluster of argon is charged to 320,000 by a laser that lasts only a 100 billionth of a millionth of a second. Such a super highly charged ice piece explodes soon after, accelerating the charged atoms (Ions) to a million electron volts of energy. The TIFR research now found that all the expelled electrons can be put back into the charged ion that has been accelerated so that it now reverts to being a neutral atom but at high energies. To top it all, this process is nearly 100% efficient at neutralizing the speeding ions and converting them to fast atoms.

Accelerated neutral atoms are very important for many applications. Unaffected by electric or magnetic fields, they penetrate deeper in solids than electrons/ions and thereby create high finesse microstructures for novel electronics and optical devices. Fast atoms are used both as diagnostics and heating sources in Tokomak machines like the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) in France, that are being developed to create sustained thermo-nuclear fusion. The TIFR scheme can produce a point source of fast neutral atoms close to the location of an intended application.

This certainly shows that staying neutral under extreme provocation has its advantages.

Monday finish for foggy Farmers Insurance Open - SBNation.com

The 2013 Farmers Insurance Open won't be settled on Sunday, as Saturday's play was postponed due to poor weather conditions. The event now extends into Monday.

Pea-soup fog put Tiger Woods? pursuit of his eighth win at Torrey Pines on hold for at least another day and probably two.

Woods never even got to the course, since, after essentially a day-long interruption, only three players finished one hole of Saturday?s scheduled third round. It was the second time in three weeks that weather wrecked havoc on a PGA Tour event, with thick fog the culprit this time.

After eight hours of delays, officials finally suspended play at the Farmers Insurance Open, set a 10 a.m. ET resumption of competition and expected to complete the tournament on Monday -- weather permitting.

?If Mother Nature doesn't cooperate, we don't have very much control over that,? said Mark Russell, the tour?s VP of competition. ?We're going to be out here, ready to play, and see what happens.?

If all goes well -- and that, ironically, would include rain and wind moving in to blow away the dense fog that kept the course in a shroud all day Saturday -- golfers will play as long as daylight allows and finish up on Monday.

This will be the second event of the nascent season slated to spill over beyond its originally scheduled finish. Heavy winds caused the season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua to start on Monday, the day it had been slated to end. Officials reduced that event to 54 holes. This time, the 78 players who made the 36-hole cut will play off two tees on Saturday, with a brief break for lunch between rounds.

The last time weather shortened this event to 54 holes was in 1998, but Russell said that would not happen this year.

?We basically, lost the whole day to day. So we'll be back here in position at 7 in the morning, and we're going to play golf all day until dark, and then when it gets dark, we'll suspend play, and we'll come back Monday morning and finish the championship if the weather cooperates,? he said. ?That is the plan.?

In addition to the mess the weather was making of the Farmers, 17 players in the field this week were slated to play the Monday qualifier for next week?s Phoenix Open. Among them was Billy Horschel, who will play alongside Woods for the duration at Torrey.

Russell noted that those players would have the latest possible times in Phoenix so they would have a chance to finish up in San Diego and get to the qualifier in time.

While weather woes caused flashbacks to Kapalau, where officials had to wipe out play twice, this time players had completed two rounds before the delays. On Saturday, Hunter Mahan, Robert Garrigus and John Mallinger finished one hole -- the 10th -- before officials halted play after just five minutes.

Russell expected golfers would have to play between nine and 12 holes on Monday.

For Woods, it was something of a deja vu. He won at Torrey Pines in 2005 after fog caused a similar delay.

Golf Channel will pick up the action at 1 pm. ET and run through 2:30 p.m., with CBS going on air between 3 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

How Do You Get a Trademark? ? Law | Raw Business Law

business_corporate_law_img.jpg

While some individuals choose to hire attorneys to walk them through the process of applying for a trademark, others choose to use a trademark research firm, which can cost thousands of dollars less. It is important to remember when hiring someone to do your research that they not only search through Federal and State trademark records for name similarities, but also Common-Law listings.

Many people are under the impression that they can perform their own comprehensive search utilizing the help of search engines, in addition to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (herein referred to as the USPTO). While it is a good idea to become familiar with the USPTO website, individuals sometimes believe that the data they collect from this website is truly representative of the trademarked names which are currently being used. The USPTO?s website is never a thorough way to search the name you?re hoping to trademark! The website is not updated regularly, and in addition to this, you can ONLY search Federal trademark records on the USPTO, NOT State trademark records OR Common-Law records!

It is imperative to search Federal and State trademark records AND Common-Law records because it is the only way to ensure that your search was done in a comprehensive manner. Federal and State trademarks records are looking at businesses that have either a federally registered trademark, or those who have registered a state trademark. When these records are searched, any federal or state trademarks that are either pending or registered will be visible to the researcher. Common-Law records examine those businesses who are in business but not have necessarily filed for a Federal or a State trademark. When Common-Law records are searched, thousands upon thousands of newspaper articles, city business listings, periodicals, incorporation listings, DBAs, LLCs, etc. are examined for any name similarities. Although such businesses do not have a trademark, they might have ?first-use rights? to the name. This could mean that they still have ownership over the name within their trad e area AND the capacity to take legal recourse if they determine that your name and business is the same, or similar.

If the research proves clear, the next step is to prepare and file the application. This can be done by anyone; however, the USPTO is very particular about how the application is prepared, so it?s best to leave it to professionals.

Three Steps ? Federal & State trademark search, US National Common-Law search and Application Preparation & Filing ? and the Trademark could be YOURS!

Secret hearings held in killing of intern Chandra Levy

Family photo via AP

Chandra Levy, a 24-year-old grad student from the University of Southern California, went missing in 2001 after completing a federal internship.

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

The 2001 slaying of Washington, D.C., intern Chandra Levy is back in court, but behind closed doors: Records show a judge has been holding secret hearings in the case of the man convicted of killing her, according to The Associated Press.

Hearings have been held for the past several weeks, with neither prosecutors nor defense lawyers revealing their purpose, according to court records obtained by AP. The next hearing will be on Feb. 7 in D.C. Superior Court; The AP and several other media organizations are petitioning to open the proceedings.

Ingmar Guandique was?convicted of first-degree murder in November 2010, nine years after Levy's disappearance and death, despite no DNA evidence linking him to the crime, and a lack of witnesses.

Levy's father, Robert Levy, told?KGO-TV in San Francisco?that he has not been told what's been happening in the secret court hearings. He said Guandique was a "convicted rapist and an illegal alien."?

But, he added, "if he's innocent of murder, he shouldn't be in jail for it."?

Ingmar Guandique, seen in 2009.

Police had initially questioned then-California Rep. Gary Condit -- who Levy was romantically tied to -- in their search for suspects, before determining he wasn?t involved. The following year, when Levy's remains were found in a Washington national park, authorities charged Guandique, who was already in prison for attacking female joggers in the same park, reported The AP.

Levy's case stole the attention of the national media. Condit was never charged, but his political aspirations were ruined nonetheless.

Prosecutors had requested a life prison sentence for Guandique, an illegal immigrant from El Savador. Instead, he was given a 60-year sentence, which he?is currently serving.

After he was sentenced, Levy's mom, Susan, asked him if he was the one who killed her daughter, and he shook his head.

"Mr. Guandique, you are lower than a cockroach," she?told him at the time, according to The AP.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

This time of year, it doesn?t feel much like spring. We just came off a week of bone-chilling cold, accompanied by our first amount of measurable snow. When your car is covered with salt and there?s still one more football game to go, the greening of the grass and that first backyard barbecue can seem like a far way off.

APNewsBreak: Harkin won't seek 6th Senate term

Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, speaks to reporters following a rally in support of three Iowa Supreme Court justices who are up for retention votes in the November election, in Des Moines, Iowa. In this Monday, Oct. 25, 2010 photo, U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, speaks to reporters following a rally in support of three Iowa Supreme Court justices who are up for retention votes in the November election, in Des Moines, Iowa. Harkin says he will not seek re-election in 2014, The Associated Press reports Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013. (AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall)

(AP) ? U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin said Saturday he will not seek a sixth term in 2014, a decision that eases some of the burden the national Republican Party faces in retaking the Senate.

Harkin, chairman of an influential Senate committee, announced his decision during an interview with The Associated Press, saying the move could surprise some.

The 73-year-old cited his age ? he would be 81 at the end of a sixth term ? as a factor in the decision, saying it was time to pass the torch he has held for nearly 30 years, freeing a new generation of Iowa Democrats to seek higher office.

"I just think it's time for me to step aside," Harkin told the AP.

Harkin, first elected in 1984, ranks seventh in seniority and fourth among majority Democrats. He is chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, and chairman of the largest appropriations subcommittee.

Harkin has long aligned with the Senate's more liberal members, and his signature legislative accomplishment is the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act. He also served as a key salesman of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul to the wary left.

"I'm not saying that giving this up and walking away is easy. It's very tough," Harkin said at his rural Iowa home south of Des Moines. "But I'm not quitting today. I'm not passing the torch sitting down."

Harkin's news defied outward signals. Besides being beloved in his party, Harkin has $2.7 million in his campaign war chest, second most among members nearing the end of their terms, and was planning a fundraiser in Washington, D.C., next month featuring pop star Lady Gaga.

Obama released a statement saying Harkin will be missed and thanking the senator for his service. "During his tenure, he has fought passionately to improve quality of life for Americans with disabilities and their families, to reform our education system and ensure that every American has access to affordable health care," Obama said.

Although members of his family have been diagnosed with cancer, Harkin said his health is good ? and reported a recent positive colonoscopy. But he said "you never know," and that he wanted to travel and spend his retirement with his wife, Ruth, "before it's too late."

He also nodded to his political longevity: "The effect of that cascades down and it opens a lot of doors of opportunity" for future candidates.

But by opening a door in Iowa, Harkin has created a potential headache for his party nationally.

Democrats likely would have had the edge in 2014 with the seat, considering Harkin's fundraising prowess and healthy approval. A poll by the Des Moines Register last fall showed a majority of Iowans approved of his job performance.

Democrats hold a 55-45 advantage in the Senate, requiring Republicans to gain six seats to win back the chamber. But Democrats have more seats to defend in 2014 ? 20 compared with only 13 for Republicans. Historically, the president's party loses seats in the midterm elections after his re-election.

In GOP-leaning West Virginia, five-term Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller recently announced he would not seek re-election. And on Friday, Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss, a Republican, announced that he wouldn't seek a third term.

Democratic incumbents also face tough re-election races in Arkansas, Louisiana, Montana, North Carolina and Alaska ? all carried by Republican Mitt Romney in November's presidential election.

Harkin's move opens a rare open Senate seat Iowa. Harkin, Iowa's junior senator, is outranked by Sen. Charles Grassley, who has held the state's other seat since 1980.

Attention will turn to U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, a fourth-term Democrat from Waterloo who has long been mentioned as a possible Harkin successor. Braley, who was traveling in Iowa, did not immediately return requests by the AP for comments beyond an emailed statement calling Harkin a "mentor" and "progressive force" who leaves "a legacy few will ever match."

Harkin held open the possibility of endorsing a Democrat before the primary if the candidate "is a pragmatic progressive."

Although no Republicans have stepped forward, Harkin's news gives the GOP's private huddles new life.

"There are lots of conversations, but it's very early still," said Nick Ryan, an Iowa Republican campaign fundraiser.

U.S. Rep. Tom Latham of Clive is a seasoned Republican congressman, a veteran House Appropriations Committee member and a robust fundraiser who has won 10 consecutive terms. Aides to Latham declined to comment beyond a statement saying the congressman "respects Sen. Harkin's decision (and) looks forward to continuing to work with him."

Since November, Harkin has stepped up his role as one of the Senate's leading liberal populists.

He was a vocal opponent late last year of Obama's concession to lift the income threshold for higher taxes to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. Harkin instead supported raising taxes on all earners making more than $250,000 a year.

He also endorsed Obama's call for banning assault rifles and larger ammunition magazines after the Connecticut school shooting.

Despite Harkin's strong political position, he has faced questions about his and his wife's role in developing a namesake policy institute at Iowa State University, Harkin's alma mater. The Harkins and their supporters have been pushing for the institute to house papers highlighting his signature achievements, including the ADA and shaping farm policy as the former chairman of the Agriculture Committee.

Harkin has avoided questions about fundraising for the institute after disclosure reports showed some of its largest donors are firms that have benefited from his policies.

Harkin dismissed that those questions had any bearing on his decision.

Prostate Cancer Patients Upset Over Shortened Penises ...

According to a new study from researchers from Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women?s Cancer Center (DF/BWCC), a small percentage of men treated for prostate cancer complained that their penis seemed shorter after treatment. Some of the men even complained that the predicament interfered with their intimate relationships and regretted their treatment option.

The complaints were more common in men treated with radical prostatectomy (the surgical removal of the prostate) or hormone-blocking drugs combined with radiation therapy. No men who received radiation therapy alone complained of a shortened penis.

The study, soon to be published in the journal Urology, is the first to link perceptions of a shorter penis to lowered life satisfaction, relationship problems, and regret about certain prostate cancer treatments. Researchers surveyed 948 doctors who had treated men for prostate cancer that had seen a recurrance. Overall, 2.63% of the men complained of smaller penises, while 3.73% of those who received surgery complained of a shortened penis.

It seems that the men might not just be imagining things, either. Dr. Paul Nguyen, a radiation oncologist who led the study, stated that a smaller penis is a ?well-known? side effect among doctors, but that ?it?s almost never discussed with patients, so it can be very upsetting to some men when it occurs.?

There were no direct measurements of penis size in the study, and the surveyed doctors did not ask patients about their penis size. The complaints were brought up by the patients themselves during conversations with their doctors. For this reason, the study?s authors suggest that the problem could be more widespread than the survey found. The study recommends that doctors discuss the possibility of a shortened penis with patients before treatment.

?Patients can deal with almost any side effect if they have some inkling ahead of time that they may happen,? said Nguyen. ?Prostate cancer is one of the few cancers where patients have a choice of therapies, and because of the range of possible side effects, it can be a tough choice. This study says that when penile shortening does occur, it really does affect patients and their quality of life. It?s something we should be discussing up front so that it will help reduce treatment regrets.?

J.Lo, Aretha defend Beyonce's performance

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

There's another question being raised in the did-she or didn't-she Beyonce lip-sync discussion: Does it matter? Not according to several fellow performers, who are speaking up about the controversy, as Jason Kennedy reported for TODAY on Friday.?

As he noted, Jennifer Lopez appeared on "The Daily Show" to explain why certain performances require pre-taped vocals. "In certain stadiums, in certain venues, they do pre-record things, because you're going to have that terrible 'slapback,'" she said. (Slapback occurs when there's a delay in vocals or instruments, and is sometimes used to great effect -- but live, it can be problematic.)

The technical issues involved in large-venue performances like stadiums exaggerate this effect, which means singers have to make a decision over whether to risk going off-key, echoing or encountering other possible issues. Cold, dry temperatures can also be challenges for vocal cords. When faced with both challenges, even a veteran like Aretha Franklin, who had a few rough spots during her performance at President Obama's first inauguration, can have issues.

And with the national anthem, a difficult song even in ideal situations, other singers have lip-synced, including Whitney Houston, who sang the song at the 1991 Super Bowl.

As Franklin explained, if Beyonce had taken precautions, she shouldn't be blamed for it. "I could certainly understand her pre-recording to assure and guarantee her performance," she said in a phone interview.?

Everyone from fans to audio engineers has speculated whether or not Beyonce sang live or with some assistance, but likely it was some combination of the two, in the end. Whatever the answer, all eyes -- and ears -- are likely to be trained on her in ten days, when she sings at Super Bowl XLVII.

Dutchman elected new chief of eurogroup

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The Dutch finance minister, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, was elected Monday as the new president of the group of euro area finance ministers.

Dijsselbloem, 46, who has only been the Netherlands' finance minister since November, will now face one of the world's most daunting financial tasks ? helping to lead the group of 17 European Union countries that use the euro back to financial stability.

Some EU leaders feel the corner has been turned in the effort to save the euro currency.

But at a press conference after the meeting of the eurozone finance ministers in Brussels, at which he was elected, Dijsselbloem cautioned against overconfidence.

"The job isn't done yet," he said.

He promised to focus on growth and further integration.

"The completion of the banking union is essential," he said.

Dijsselbloem replaces Jean-Claude Juncker, the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, who held the job for eight years. The Dutchman, who is 46, has been finance minister only since November.

Despite his inexperience, he will face immediate challenges, including the need to negotiate a bailout for Cyprus, reducing high national debt in some countries as well as crushing unemployment, and growing opposition to austerity in some eurozone countries.

Dijsselbloem had broad support at the finance ministers meeting, but Spain did not vote in favor of him. Dijsselbloem said the Spanish finance minister, Luis de Guindos, offered no explanation for his lack of support.

Dijsselbloem (DIE-sell-bloom) served in the Dutch parliament as a member of the center-left Labor party for most of the past decade until being named finance minister a bit over two months ago. His candidacy to lead the eurogroup came as a surprise, but he emerged as the compromise candidate among Europe's main political groups and between economically stronger and weaker nations.

The Netherlands' top-notch AAA credit rating and longstanding support for German positions on the need for budget discipline, free trade and fighting inflation made a Dutch candidate a palatable choice for Berlin's center-right government. Dijsselbloem's affiliation with the Labor Party, meanwhile, made him an acceptable choice for France's Socialist President Francois Hollande.

"He's the candidate, he's the only one, so obviously he's the best," French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said before the meeting.

Juncker, who is also prime minister of Luxembourg, has over the past three years been at the heart of efforts to avoid a breakup of the euro, a currency used by 330 million people. He has weathered all-night meetings and early-morning press conferences with global markets hanging on his every word.

Other European Union officials offered fulsome praise for Juncker as he held his final press conference as eurogroup president.

"Jean-Claude Juncker is really one of the true and great Europeans of our time," said Klaus Regling, head of the European Stability Mechanism, the eurozone's new bailout fund.

Juncker said Monday he was relieved to step down. He also dashed hopes for a quick solution to the eurozone's latest problem, the cash-strapped Mediterranean island nation of Cyprus, which is seeking a bailout from its European partners.

He said a decision would probably be made in March.

Cyprus is seeking rescue loans of about ?17 billion ($22.6 billion) ? almost equivalent to its annual gross domestic product. About ?10 billion would shore up the country's ailing banks, with the remainder meant to keep the government afloat.

The bailout could push Cyprus' debt to 150 percent of gross domestic product, a level economists consider unsustainable for such a small economy.

In creditor nations such as Germany, Europe's biggest economy, the bailout has been met with skepticism amid allegations that Cypriot banks have helped launder Russian money and facilitated tax evasion.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung that it was unclear whether there would be a bailout at all, because it wasn't clear if a Cypriot bankruptcy "would endanger the eurozone as a whole at all."

If Europe and the International Monetary Fund balk at bailing out Cyprus, which accounts for only 0.19 percent of the eurozone's economy, the country could face bankruptcy within months, possibly forcing it to leave the eurozone.

Moscovici hinted that Europeans wouldn't let Cyprus down, stressing that the priority must be to secure "the integrity of the eurozone."

Request accommodations info after FMLA leave expires ? Business ...

Employees who run out of FMLA leave may still be eligible for additional time off under the ADA if their condition qualifies as a disability.

When FMLA leave expires, it?s smart to request further information and invite a dialogue on possible accommodations. If the employee declines, she can?t later argue that you didn?t accommodate her.

Recent case: Lesonya took 12 weeks of FMLA leave for surgery. While at home recuperating, she received several letters from her employer inviting her to request accommodations if she felt she was disabled and unable to work just yet.

Lesonya didn?t respond and was terminated. Then she sued, arguing she had been confused by the letters and really had needed reasonable accommodations.

The court said she lost her chance. (Jefferson v. Biogen, No. 5:10-CV-237, ED NC, 2012)

Sony Xperia Tablet Z Aims for ?World?s Thinnest? Crown

With so few companies releasing high-end Android tablets these days, it?s kind of refreshing to see something like Sony?s Xperia Tablet Z.

The Tablet Z weighs just 1.09 pounds and measures 0.27 inches thick, with a 10.1-inch, 1080p display. As Engadget notes, it?edges out the Toshiba Excite 10 LE as the world?s thinnest and lightest 10-inch tablet. For good measure, it?s also thinner and lighter than Apple?s iPad 2 (and the bulkier current-generation iPad) and slimmer than the iPad Mini.

That?s not for a lack of tech specs, either. The Xperia Tablet Z has some fancy innards, including a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor from Qualcomm and ?2 GB of RAM. Other specs include 32 GB of storage, a Micro SDXC card slot, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front camera, virtual surround sound speakers and built-in LTE connectivity. The only concern here is its 6,000 mAh battery, which is a bit smaller than what you find on other Android tablets, but it?s unclear how that will translate to real-world battery life.

The Xperia Tablet Z also shares some common threads with the Xperia Z smartphone that Sony announced at CES. Both devices are waterproof and dustproof, and they?re both equipped with NFC, so you can stream music or video from one device to the other by tapping them together. They have similar design flourishes as well, with slightly boxy looks and glass panels that cover the rear sides of both devices.

Sony

For software, the Tablet Z will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, with some additional tweaks and apps from Sony. For instance, there?s a Walkman music app with its own visualizer, a built-in photo editor and a slideshow app that can automatically select appropriate music.

So far, Sony has only announced the Xperia Tablet Z for the Japanese market, due to launch this spring, but it seems likely that it?ll eventually go on sale elsewhere. I?m guessing we?ll find out more at Mobile World Congress, a trade show held in Barcelona at the end of February.

As I noted when writing about Vizio?s Android tablets, it seems that most hardware makers have lost interest in producing high-end Android slates, instead turning their attention to Windows 8 or focusing on cheap Android tablets that don?t compete head-on with Apple?s iPad. The main exception is Google itself, with its Nexus 10. (I don?t really consider the Kindle Fire or Barnes & Noble?s Nook tablets among this group, since they?ve modified Android beyond all recognition and have built entirely separate ecosystems out of Google?s source code.)

We may see more tablet makers swing back to Android this year, especially if Windows 8 tablets don?t prove as popular as hardware makers had hoped, but for now, a small number of well-designed Android tablets have a chance to stand out. Hopefully Sony?s Xperia Tablet Z can get to market soon, so we can see if it?s as good as it looks on paper.

NASA 'Mohawk Guy' to march in inaugural parade

When President Barack Obama takes his oath of office to begin his second term Monday, NASA will be there.

NASA's famed "Mohawk Guy" Bobak Ferdowsi will march in the Presidential Inaugural Parade on Monday along with life-size replicas of the space agency's Mars rover Curiosity and Orion space capsule.

Ferdowsi is a flight director at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory whose unique hairdo catapulted him to Internet fame after the spectacular Mars rover Curiosity landing last year.

"The things we do, the exploration we do, is not just about learning about other planets. It's about understanding our own. NASA gives us a chance to travel outside our world as a way to look back and learn about ourselves as a species ? as people. There's nowhere else in the world where you get to do that," Ferdowsi said in a statement.

Ferdowsi is reportedly trading in his mohawk locks for a new hairdo in honor of the President's inauguration. According to an interview with Wired, Ferdowsi is keeping details of the new hairstyle under wraps until the inaugural parade.

Ferdowsi will march in the inaugural parade alongside Curiosity, the Orion spacecraft and other NASA scientists as part of the agency's official Presidential Inaugural Weekend. The $2.5 billion Curiosity rover landed on Mars on Aug. 5 to begin a two-year mission aimed at determining if the planet could have ever supported microbial life. NASA's Orion deep-space capsule ? the agency's first new spaceship designed by NASA since the space shuttle in the 1970s ? is designed to send humans farther into space than ever before. The space agency hopes the capsule will be the vessel for manned missions to asteroids, the moon and even Mars.

NASA is hosting an open house for the agency?s social media participants Friday in honor of the inauguration as well. The open house is available to the public without a reservation, but 75 specially chosen guests will get a ?reserved seat? that gives them special access to various events throughout the day.

The open house will also include panel discussions with NASA astronauts and displays showing off some of the agency?s accomplishments.

Telescopes will be set up outside the David M. Brown Planetarium in Arlington, Va., for a "Star Party" Saturday. Experts with NASA will speak about the future of space exploration and missions the agency already has in the works.

Journal News Removes Controversial Handgun Permit Information From Website

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- A suburban New York newspaper that outraged gun owners by posting the names and addresses of residents with handgun permits removed the information from its website Friday.

The Journal News took down the data just three days after the state enacted a gun control law that included privacy provisions for permit holders.

The provisions were a reaction to interactive maps the newspaper published on LoHud.com that pinpointed thousands of permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties.

Gun rights activists had immediately complained that permit owners' privacy was being violated. They said the map could guide burglars to their homes while police groups claimed the map could lead ex-convicts to the officers who had put them away.

The addresses of some Journal News staffers were posted online, and threats were called in to the newspaper's offices. The newspaper hired armed guards in response.

Janet Hasson, president and publisher of The Journal News Media Group, said in an emailed statement, "While the new law does not require us to remove the data, we believe that doing so complies with its spirit."

She said the maps had been viewed nearly 1.2 million times since they were published Dec. 23. The newspaper sought the records under the state Freedom of Information Law after the Dec. 14 elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman who had killed his mother at home killed 20 first-graders and six educators and then committed suicide.

The maps remained online late Friday but could no longer be manipulated to find names and addresses.

State Sen. Greg Ball, the most vocal opponent of the posting, said, "Thank God The Journal News has finally realized the error in their judgment and done the right thing. ... I am proud to have passed legislation keeping The Journal News from doing this ever again."

On Tuesday, as part of a gun control bill, the state Legislature passed and Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed new regulations that give permit holders several ways to opt out of the public record.

Applicants can ask to be exempted because they are police officers or served on criminal-case juries or are victims of domestic violence. They also can just say they might be subjected to harassment.

Hasson said Friday, "One of our core missions as a newspaper is to empower our readers with as much information as possible on the critical issues they face, and guns have certainly become a top issue since the massacre in nearby Newtown, Conn."

Wanderfly

I became a traveler around the same time that travel guide books lost relevancy. A handful of books from Time Out and Frommer's still line my bookshelves for old time's sake, but I have largely ditched printed travel media and all the dog-earing of pages that goes with them, in favor of websites, apps, and interactive maps. One site I've been exploring, Wanderfly (free), is a free Web app and Chrome app that works like an online travel book for recommendations of things to do, eat, and see while traveling.

It's unlike TripAdvisor or other travel review sites, and more similar to Tripomatic or Stay.com, services that help you build personal "city guides" and itineraries. Wanderfly looks much more artfully designed than both Stay.com and Tripomatic, but it doesn't have as many useful features.

When you sign up for Wanderfly, you must create an account using either a Google account ID or your Facebook credentials. I would much prefer to see an option to create an account using any email address I like, as I like to protect some of my other accounts from interacting with outside sites and services. Throughout my time using the site, I had repeated moments like this one when I felt worried because I didn't know how my data might be used or what privacy protections I could put in place for myself. For example, as you create a profile, there's no indication if this profile will be public (it is, and there's no option to change it) or private, or if you have any control over who can see it.

In building your profile, you'll be asked to name some qualities of a trip that appeal to you: adventure, luxury, culture, trendy, art, and so forth. These descriptors are used to 1) populate a list of people you will "follow" and 2) suggest places you might want to travel.

Wanderfly automatically starts you down the path of following perhaps dozens of users it recommends, which I was again uncomfortable seeing.

Where to?
The main thrust of Wanderfly is to search for your next holiday destination, and you start by ticking off new or different qualities if you so choose, as well as toggling an expense estimator to reign you in from daydreaming too long about a trip you can't afford. One problem with the expense estimator is it's not clear exactly what's included in the price. Is it accounting for accommodations only or accommodations and airfare from my home city (indicated in my profile)? You can also set a limit for the number of days you'll be traveling, and type in a specific region to further narrow your search results, too.

A search for a $1,400, four-night trip somewhere adventuresome, deemed "essential" by other travelers, and with good food enticed me toward Cusco, Peru, the Dutch Carribean island of Cura?ao, Marrakesh, Morocco, and a few other places both near and far. These results seemed more randomly generated than based on my terms, and that's in part because they're generated by other users and how they tag locations.

Pick a destination, and Wanderfly pulls up a list of local places to see, eat, drink, and have fun, again with user-generated information about all of them. When you land on a place you might like, you can save it to your account.

No Itineraries
What you cannot do is plan what day or time you'll visit these places. At least Wanderfly supplies an interactive Google map to help you plot out what's nearby.

A few other features include modules for searching for flights (which directs you to Orbitz, one of our favorite travel booking sites) and hotels, which opens in another window as a Wanderfly-branded hotel reservation search aggregation site. To confirm and pay for a hotel, you'll have to link through to yet another website, but the aggregation tool is helpful to have on hand nevertheless for doing a true cost estimate.

After I had explored a few possible destinations and saved more specific recommendations of where to visit once I arrived, I wanted to navigate back to a view that showed all my saved destinations?and that proved tricky. After a little trial-and-error, I found I could click on my user name at the very top right of the screen to find this rather essential page. Seeing as saving destinations and suggested itineraries is the heart of the app, I was expecting that link to be more prominent and more obviously labeled.

Wanderfly provides yet another interesting take on online, interactive, social travel guides, but it is ultimately not a whole lot more useful than a traditional travel book. Until it can help you create day-by-day itineraries?and provide adequate tools or at least more information about what is private and public on the site?you're better off using Stay.com, even though it's not smart-looking.

Mathematical breakthrough sets out rules for more effective teleportation

Jan. 16, 2013 ? For the last ten years, theoretical physicists have shown that the intense connections generated between particles as established in the quantum law of 'entanglement' may hold the key to eventual teleportation of quantum information.

Now, for the first time, researchers have worked out how entanglement could be 'recycled' to increase the efficiency of these connections. Published in the journal Physical Review Letters, the result could conceivably take us a step closer to sci-fi style teleportation in the future, although this research is purely theoretical in nature.

The team have also devised a generalised form of teleportation, which allows for a wide variety of potential applications in quantum physics.

Once considered impossible, in 1993 a team of scientists calculated that teleportation could work in principle using quantum laws. Quantum teleportation harnesses the 'entanglement' law to transmit particle-sized bites of information across potentially vast distances in an instant.

Entanglement involves a pair of quantum particles such as electrons or protons that are intrinsically bound together, retaining synchronisation between the two that holds whether the particles are next to each other or on opposing sides of a galaxy. Through this connection, quantum bits of information -- qubits -- can be relayed using only traditional forms of classical communication.

Previous teleportation protocols, have fallen into one of two camps, those that could only send scrambled information requiring correction by the receiver, or more recently, "port-based" teleportation that doesn't require a correction, but needed an impractical amount of entanglement -- each object sent would destroy the entangled state.

Now, physicists from Cambridge, University College London, and the University of Gdansk have developed a protocol to provide an optimal solution in which the entangled state is 'recycled', so that the gateway between particles holds for the teleportation of multiple objects.

They have even devised a protocol in which multiple qubits can be teleported simultaneously, although the entangled state degrades proportionally to the amount of qubits sent in both cases.

"The first protocol consists of sequentially teleporting states, and the second teleports them in a bulk," said Sergii Strelchuck from Cambridge's Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, who led the research with colleagues Jonathan Oppenheim of Cambridge and UCL and Michal Horodecki of the University of Gdansk.

"We have also found a generalised teleportation technique which we hope will find applications in areas such as quantum computation."

Einstein famously loathed the theory of quantum entanglement, dismissing it as "spooky action at a distance." But entanglement has since been proven to be a very real feature of our universe, and one that has extraordinary potential to advance all manner of scientific endeavor.

"There is a close connection between teleportation and quantum computers, which are devices which exploit quantum mechanics to perform computations which would not be feasible on a classical computer," said Strelchuck.

"Building a quantum computer is one of the great challenges of modern physics, and it is hoped that the new teleportation protocol will lead to advances in this area."

While the Cambridge physicists' protocol is completely theoretical, last year a team of Chinese scientists reported teleporting photons over 143km, breaking previous records, and quantum entanglement is increasingly seen as an important area of scientific investment. Teleportation of information carried by single atoms is feasible with current technologies, but the teleportation of large objects -- such as Captain Kirk -- remains in the realm of science fiction.

Adds Strelchuck: "Entanglement can be thought of as the fuel, which powers teleportation. Our protocol is more fuel efficient, able to use entanglement thriftily while eliminating the need for error correction."

Obama uses press conference to hammer Republicans over debt ceiling

Bloomberg

President Barack Obama says raising the debt ceiling is needed to pay for spending that's already occurred, not new spending.

Staff Baltimore Business Journal

President Barack Obama used the final press conference of his first term to attack Republicans for tying an increase in the federal government's debt ceiling to additional spending cuts, The Business Journals reported.

If the debt ceiling isn't raised on time, Social Security checks and veterans' benefits would be delayed, troops might not get paid, and federal contracts with small businesses might not be honored, Obama said.
