NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine ?Ron Paul could score his first win ever in the Maine caucuses when results are announced this evening.
?I think we?re going to do real well, but I don?t make predictions? I think we could [win], I hope we do,? Paul told POLITICO Saturday morning, minutes before he spoke at a caucus site.
Continue ReadingThe race ? where 24 non-bound delegates are at stake ? is a tight one between Paul and Mitt Romney, who made a last-minute appearance in Portland on Friday night for a town hall and buoyed supporters by visiting caucus sites on Saturday. The state GOP plans to announce the results of the week-long caucuses at 6:20 p.m.
But Paul has made the biggest investment of energy here and even his opponents point to his superior state organization.
?I think Ron Paul is going to take it. I have a tremendous amount of respect for his organization. They?ve been planning since before 2007,? said John Grooms, the state grassroots director for the Newt Gingrich campaign.
?Ron Paul has the best grassroots organization in the state,? conceded Ralph Ginorio, who was a representative for Rick Santorum at a caucus site.
Neither Santorum nor Gingrich have any paid staff in Maine, and neither candidate has campaigned here.
Unlike Romney ? who hadn?t visited Maine until last night this election cycle ? Paul has been to the Pine Tree State on several occasions, meeting privately with Gov. Paul LePage, a tea-party favorite and receiving the blessing of L.L. Bean heiress Linda Bean.
The Texas congressman stumped at three caucus sites today, emphasizing his efforts in the state.
?We figured, well, we?re going to work in states where we can organize and really energize people who really believe in something. And the message was resonating here, the message of individual liberty and a different foreign policy? so we kept coming back,? he said.
?As a matter of fact we started four years ago,? Paul said in an elementary school gymnasium north of Portland, which was packed for his appearance. ?In a small state, and a caucus, if you have people who are energized, all of a sudden their value is magnified.?
Romney made two caucus appearances on Saturday, hammering President Obama on the contraception controversy regarding religious organizations distributing contraception as part of employee health-care benefits.
?The president?s recent attack on religious conscience and liberty in this country is contrary to the constitution, and it?s wrong. I saw the same thing happen in my state, happened time and again,? he said. ?I vetoed measure after measure that was designed to take religion out of life and put secular values forward? if I?m president, I will fight all the Obama-era efforts to attack religion.?
